I've been reading some of the threads in the vintage section and can appreciate there's guyz on here who really know their stuff. I also notice some of you only seem to post in this section which is a pity for the same reason as before, you know your stuff.

Anyway can any of you guyz either post a pic or tell me which Breitling is the most sought after, i.e the holier than holy 'golden grail'! :D

Just as a side note I know you'll all have your own opinions and thats fine by me, I'm just interested to know what your opinions are.

ps The 1952 Navigation Timer is exempt from this thread!

Cheers

Wow, that's a tough one.

I have a soft spot for rattrapantes, a Chronomat and 806 ratty pair would be very nice - rare beasts those. The duograph rattrapantes - especially 766 would also be a nice pick up.

There are a lot of other vintage pieces that I would like to pick up, but those are probably true grails.

Wow... good question...

for me it would have to be a 765 Co pilot... of course as Roff mentions some rattrapantes would be nice... a superocean chronograph... I'll take all of the caliber 11 c-matics of course...

but definitely if I'd pick one I'll be boring and make it a co-pilot...

For me it's the Unitime. Something about that watch just grabs me.

That's my vintage grail but I would also love to find a Pluton Thunderbirds version or the Pluton Blue Angels since I'm a Pluton fan.

Nice question. Not easily answered in one watch though.
For me grails change over time and many are highly personal.

For your basic grail watch I would agree with Roff a large size Rattrapante.

Something like this in 38 or 40mm. One off these would have me figuring what I could sell to buy it (which I think is the true test of a grail).

However, my personal grail would be a pilots chronograph from the 1940's with the snail tachy. Never ever seen one of these for sale. It would probably have been unmarked or numbered and most people wouldn't even know it was a Breitling.

However your question was not simply for a grail watch, it was for the "grail of grails" a Breitling so unique, so unattainable, that it would be a one off. With that in mind I would suggest this one.

He looks like he's wearing it here as well?

Thanks guyz, feel free to add some more. Scott Carpenters Navitimer is leading the way for me so far, on looks obviously as I know nothing about any of them. I like the Co-pilot to Jlee, very nice!

Anyway, thanks I'll check back tomorrow night for some more!

Cheers

The funny thing about the co-pilot is that they're around... there was one on ebay awhile back that was in NOS condition complete with tags and box :!: and went for 8k~!

but for me to drop north of 4k for a vintage timepiece is a significant step... but the good thing is that co-pilots retain their value fairly well compared to other pieces... and they're so choice... :D

I guess in the context of 'there can be only one' then there is always serial number 1 - don't know anything about it, or if it's documented, but that would be pretty special. Carpenter's cossie is a good one, in a similar vein, although not quite so special (for me) would be the Breitlings from the Bond movies.

Away from watches, we know that Breitling supplied flight clocks to the allies in WWII so if there was a documented piece from something like a Dambusters aircraft that would be pretty darn special, but I suspect that they either don't exist or aren't documented.

When I sold my first Copilot about 8 years ago I gave the new owner a DVD of the movie too. There are a couple pretty good close up shots of both Raquel and the watch.

Although I think this is a toptime to which the Production Designer added an extra "geiger counter" case!

Start searching those Car Boot and Yard sales. Those nice people at Breitling gave him a new one when he got the old one wet and kept it for their museum!

"As far as I can tell, Scott Carpenter was the first American Astronaut to wear a wristwatch in space. When Scott splashed down in his Aurora 7 capsule his Breitling got wet and experienced some water damage. Scott sent it back to Breitling for repair, but Breitling pulled the switcho-chango and sent him back a different watch, thus keeping the first wristwatch flown in space for their museum."

How about one of these Datora Duograph, the most complicated watch Breitling ever made I think. Small though, 35mm, about the size of your average Patek Chronograph.
