Here's a very rare bird. Breitling Duograph ref: 762. Auction description: Watches, Breitling BREITLING, Duograph, "Rattrapante", Cal Venus 179, Ref no. 762, Case no. 510924, chronograph, splitseconds, men´s wristwatch, 36 mm, steel, manual, plastic crystal, damaged dial (7/10), leatherstrap, approx 1944. Attachment: 1 copy.jpg Attachment: 2 copy.jpg Attachment: 3 copy.jpg Attachment: 4 copy.jpg http://www.kaplans.se/kaplans/AuctionAr ... ktID=1894# Hammered at 74,000 KR - around £6,500, it doesn't say if it includes buyers commision, but I assume not so add another 20%. Which would potentially bring it to £7,800 (approx: $11,500) Looks good to me what do people think. Is the dial original? It mentions damage to the dial but nothing leaps out at me. Perhaps a question mark about the edge of the 4 bleeding onto the sub-dial, but hard to say and the others look crisp? The date number would make it more like late Thirties. bidding history shows two people duking it out. Interestingly it doesn't seem to be covered in strange reference numbers, just the two obvious ones. (I assume the date is on the inside of the caseback not shown). |

It looks original to me. That price is pretty strong - and it likely will be before fees so your numbers are pretty close. These pieces don't come up too often, but for this economy that's higher than I would have thought - if I had seen it before the sale I would have said $8,000 - $9,000. |

Mind you it looks like a bargain compared to the smaller watch with the common Valjoux movement. That one hammered at a wopping -- £22,500 (and no I didn't mistype this one) http://www.kaplans.se/Kaplans/AuctionAr ... ktID=1894# Quote: That price is pretty strong Agreed, but I guess it appeals to a lot of different collectors, not just us Breitling nuts. Anyone collecting vintage Chronographs will want a Split-Seconds in their collection. I'm not sure if anyone had an inhouse split-seconds movement back then, so whether it's Vacheron, Rolex or Audemars Piguet it's going to house one of the handful of these outsourced movements and the Breitling is way cheaper than any of those. Also I think in general clean rare watches with no issues are still going for the money, add to that the buyer probably inspected the watch in person, it means their confidence in what they're buying goes up. Quote: for this economy that's higher than I would have thought Yes, but there's a lot of cash that is scared to be in any one currency at the moment or in equities, when you can slip say twenty watches in a small bag and have a quarter of a million pounds worth of watches you can travel with easily it appears quite an attractive investment. People are less worried about making money, than they fear watching their cash devalue in real terms, it's why gold has skyrocketed. |

Quote: How about non-vintage rattrapantes? Very nice Chronomania. What can you tell us about the watch? Is Aviatuer the maker or the model name? What movement does it have inside? How big is it? |

How big is it? Aviatuer was the maker. I don't know much about them. You will sometimes see the Aviatuer chronographs on *bay with the 7750 triple date moonphase (the moon phase at the three o'clock position - like Chronoswiss chronos from the 1980's). The one posted above has a modified Valjoux 7750. It was purchased NOS from a dealer in Switzerland. You're right; every collector likes to add a rattrapante to their collection! ![]() ![]() Here's a no-name rattrapante pocketwatch: ![]() ![]() |

Very nice indeed, haven't seen a 783 for a while. It dates to 1950 and looks totally correct and original. Can't comment on the movement obviously, but 179 is correct for this watch. |
