Hmmm.

We saw a chrono-datic last year on eBay - not this one, that was a complete mishmash of different bits. At the time I speculated that the dial was from a Datzward (they made a chrono-datic), but maybe it was a dial from one of these. Like you I can't see anything obviously wrong with it.

Being coldly cynical the reference number is undocumented and inconsistent with a chronograph reference, and the name is odd for Breitling to use in a manual watch at a time after chrono-matics had dates.

However we know that Breitling did some odd things in the 70s and I couldn't say that any particular part of this was wrong - if it's a fabrication someone has gone to a lot of trouble for a watch that is now being sold relatively cheap.

It says 810 on the caseback, and if I recall, an 810 is a Top Time Long Playing... :?

Must be my eyesight - I read it as 310 (hence the comment) but I think that you are right.

There are Top Time and non Top Time 810s, but neither look like this.

Hello all- The correct number on the caseback IS 810. I know this because the watch is mine. It was purchased from Dave Holmes (The BigWatch Guy) on TZ (TimeZone.com) in May of '08. Here is Dave's original TZ description of the watch:

"Large 41x43mm (not counting the crown) BREITLING 17J CHRONO-DATIC (Valjoux 7734) CHRONOGRAPH ca 1970's. Triple signed and in Good to Very Good original condition. Signed on the dial, case and movement. Valjoux 7734 movement- manual wind with 2 chronograph registers and date at six. Movement is signed: BREITLING WATCH CO LTD, 17 JEWELS, and with the Valjoux crest and 7734 stamped inside the movement. The movement is running good and the watch chronographs as it should. The Case is yellow goldplate over s/s and screwback. The case is signed on the inside: BREITLING WATCH CORP. SWISS, 345270. The outer caseback is signed Breitling and with case ref number. The dial is satin silver and highly detailed with doctors chapter ring and telemeter chapter ring. Signed on the dial: B, BREITLING, GENEVE, CHRONO-DATIC, SWISS. The dial is original and in Very Good Plus condition. It has a date feature at the six position. Any Breitling chronograph is collectible and valuable. This one retains the Breitling name and alittle funk as provided by the 70's. The watch comes with a near to new dark tan/brown Breitling style leather chronograph strap with goldtone buckle. Nice "daily driver" albeit not excellent or nearmint. The images depict this watch and its condition quite well."

Since my acquisition of the watch, I have had the watch cleaned and serviced. I also replaced the pushers and had them resealed. I've also added a new Breitling-style black strap w/goldtone buckle.

Post subject:  It's great that you have been happy with the watch.
But now that you are selling it, you need to know that it is not and never has been a real Breitling. The case is not a Breitling case, the name "Chrono-datic" is not a Breitling name, the inside serial in not a Breitling serial, the case reference number is not correct for this style of watch. The watch has been assembled to fool a buyer, and Dave is not a Breitling specialist, so he was fooled, too.

I'm sorry that you have been duped, but it is a "buyer beware" world. Now that you are the seller, it would be best to correct your listing.

Yeah, now we learn more there is no way that it can be real - 810 and a 34xxxx serial numbers are the kiss of death on any possibility of originality.
