Post subject:  My new Cosmonaute

As noted in my earlier thread, I decided to purchase the Cosmonaute. My seller engaged in a little wishful thinking claiming the watch dated to 1963 (his birth year as well as mine) As it turns out, the serial number dates the watch to 1967. I was excited to have another birth year watch in my small collection, but given the condition of the watch, I'm not going to complain. The hour totalizer isn't functioning, and I'm hoping that will be a cheap fix. I'm picking up another watch from my repair guy tomorrow, and I'll have him take a look at it. I've never owned a watch with the Venus 178 movement, but I believe parts should be easy to source?

I apologize for my poor photographic skills.

It looks great, I have to change my mind about it being 100% original & unrestored though.

It has definitely been polished, the crown is not the original one, and I also believe that the pushres hane been replaced (not 100% certain about that though).

The dial is simply awesome, as good as they gets.

The pushers don't show much wear which supports replacement at some point - but that's no big deal. Original pushers and crown on these watches are harder and harder to find as they simply wear out.

As Kurt says, dial is in great condition.

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm curious what it is about the pushers and crown that lead you to believe they are or might be replacement pieces? If indeed they are replacements, are they correct? If they're not, I would be interested in sourcing appropriate parts. Any help in that regard would be appreciated.

It appeared to me that portions of the case had been polished, though not overly so. The chamfers on the lugs still retain strong definition. Could someone post some pictures of a watch with the original finish intact?

The pushers look period correct, the crown has the right look, but I suspect that what Kurt has seen is that the original crowns had more ridges around the outside than this one. I don't know of a reliable source for genuine crowns, it's just hit an miss whether a watchmaker has some.

I'm certain about the Crown, and if you look at it black or white then it's definitely not correct, as only the original ones are correct, but it's B signed and very close to the original.
Roff is right, the original one has more ridges around the outside (see picture below and count, it is unpolished as well).

Finding a crown is close to impossible, I have a few, but don't ask me for the price, as it will scare you.
