Inherited this watch from my great-grandfather however I know absolutely nothing about it. As you can see, it says "Breitling" across the chronograph face. The back says:

18K
0.750
123
391725
167

Can anyone shed any light on this watch? Thanks!

Looks like a genuine 1946 ref 167 from the pic. Here's another:

I'd like to have it. :)

It absolutely is NOT fake - it's completely genuine as Paul says.

However, I'm not quite so brave as Paul in saying that I would like it - I'd want to see movement pictures first, but with the provance it certainly sounds like a nice watch - no reason to doubt it.

I've got to get a battery put in it so I can see the movement for myself as well. The only difference, Paul, from the pictures that you posted is that my particular watch has roman numerals rather of numericals. Any ideas of the possible worth of this watch today? Thanks for the quick replies!

Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this is battery then I take it back - it is a fake!

Do you know for a fact that it is a quartz (battery) watch?????

I'll be honest. . .I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. The watch scene is completely new to me. Haha. I've tried turning the crown toward me to unlock, but when I twist the other way, it won't budge. I assume I need to take it in to somebody to look at.

If that has a battery in it I'll eat it. :P The watches value will be determined by it's gold content and whether it runs or not.

OK, that's OK then - it doesn't have a battery - though the sight of Paul eating it might have been interesting!

It is a mechanical movement and it will need servicing to get it running - reckon on $200 - $300 if there aren't any nightmares inside.

As Paul says, the sad fact is that the value will be based on the gold value, and you certainly won't get your money back on servicing. If you intend to keep it then it's definitely worth getting it to run, if you don't intend to sell it then please advertise it here or another watch forum first. I would hate to see this go on eBay and end up being melted for gold.

You should be very careful as to where you bring this watch to get serviced.

I am certainly interested in getting the watch serviced to run. I want to replace the stainless steel band with a brown leather and start wearing the watch. Two questions:

I live in Nashville TN and have no experience in getting a watch like this repaired. Any other middle Tennesseans out there to recommend a shop?

Also, I would love to know an idea of the value before I let someone tinker with it. Any ideas in this department as well?

Thanks very much for the many replies.

Post subject:  Re: Great Grandfather's Gold Breitling

Just wanted to provide an update. Got the watch back tonight from restoration. Decided to go with a leather band instead of the cheap stainless steel band. Everything is all cleaned up and in working order thanks to a close jeweler friend. I think he did an excellent job. I did, however, forget to ask him what the secondary dial is for. Could anyone shed any light? Thanks for the friendly response!
