Caliber 15...

I posted one up awhile back with a square case and I recall someone saying it was supposed to be a round case... wanted to know if this one is correct? And also, in this condition, what would be a fair price?

Well with apologies for getting all watch geek.........

The balance is wrong for a caliber 15.

That balance is from a caliber 12 without a shadow of a doubt - incabloc shock protection vs. Kif and micro adjustment screws over the cock. I would also bet that the balance is glucydur rather than brass. That makes this non original, but it also makes it better - and I don't see any other problems with the movement so just assume that during servicing the complete balance was replaced. It's up to you whether it matters.

Don't see anything wrong with the rest of the watch.

2110 is listed in Richter as Cal 12.
2111 is Cal 15.

Richter also lists several 2111 as having square cases!

In Richter a whole lot is wrong and the most uncomplete.

Richter's wrong on that one Yaffle.

The give away is the absence of the 12 hour register - the major functional difference between a 12 and a 15.

I wasn't questioning that it is a Cal 15.
Just wondering if it's a marriage, Cal 15 movement and dial dropped
into a Cal 12 case?

I always associated case ref 2110 with the two dials shown here (Cal 11/12?),
are you saying that Breitling later used the case ref 2110 for the Cal 15 as well
and didn't adopt a new case ref.?

As you say Richter is clearly wrong about the 2111 case ref as the catalogue shows it
used for the 11/12 as well?

Do you know when the Cal 15 was produced? Was it later than say 1972 and did it supercede the Cal 12,
or where both produced at the same time?

I couldn't see a date ref for the ebay watch, it would be interesting to know?

Caliber 11 / 12 can support three registers - running seconds, 30 minute chrono and 12 hour chrono.

Caliber 15 was an attempt to make a more affordable version of the movement and it dropped the 12 hour register (among other changes, including the balance which is the give away here). Therefore, it could be used interchangeably in watches that only had two subs - like the 2110.

Caliber 15 was introduced in 1972.

Found this over on on the dash,

http://onthedash.com/docs/ChronomaticMovements.html

" in 1972 Heuer and Breitling modified the Caliber 12 movement so that it was offered as the Caliber 15 movement"

Then we would expect all Cal 15's to be in a 1972 or later case ref.

What do you think?

If this is correct then we would expect all Cal 15's to be in a 1972 or later case ref.

As I said, 1972 was the date for the 15.

That link is a nice display of what's wrong with the balance on this one though.

Hi Roff,

our posts are crossing, saw yours after mine, thanks.

Logically then, all Cal 15 should be in 72 or later dated cases,
with 2110 ref? Or 2111 ref?

OK. I did a bit of snooping around and wanted to suggest something.

I've found a few references to case numbers: 2110-15 / 2111-15 / 2112-15.

http://www.finertimes.com/asp/watches/q ... =Time...us)%3D%27Pending%27))&Page=80

Breitling - 17 jewel signed microtor automatic chronograph movement (cal. 15), near mint+ stainless steel signed cushion screw [back] case (38x38mm, no personalized engraving, ref. 2111-15, factory protective seal on back), Breitling crown, hang [tag], unused [strap] and [box] another [view], mint signed black dial (original) with luminous markers, two registers; constant seconds and 30 minute recorder, orange chronograph center seconds, dial calibrated for pulsation and tachymetre, date aperture. Very unusual late model Breitling "Chronomatic" in close to new old stock condition! (Ref mptd033)

The date ref on the watch should put it to 1969.

http://www.my-vintage.com/content/gallery.php?id=44

The date ref on this should put it 1969/70

http://www.uhrwald.eu/deutsch/uhren/bre ... ic771.html

This one is ref 2111-15

Could it be that Breitling, being thrifty, just took the old cases they had in stock, regardless of the date,
then just added the suffix "-15" to them to denote the change in caliber?

The case is correct. If you blow the picture up you can see the - 15 behind the 2110. The back has been worked on to minimize the corrosion which probably lightened the - 15. The dials a mess but the bezel looks great which makes one wonder about even wear. Could be an assembled watch from parts but hard to say. In any case it is basically correct given the normal replacement of some parts during past services. Wouldn't be surprised to see it go between $1200-$1500 even with a horrible dial. I've got an extra dial but it's even worse. :(
