I have been working an a Marvin R22 chrono for nearly a month now and its had a lot of issues that didn't show up early on. I sent the owner this note after I discovered that the balance jewels were either cracked or missing....

PS - some of these old watches remind me of some of the girls I dated when I was single until I reached 37. Some of the flaws don't show up until much later!

This was his responce....

That's the funniest damn thing relating to vintage watch repair that I've ever heard!

Only watch collector nuts will get this. Craig

And the staff still had intact pivots? Meaning, of course, that the last guy probably replaced the staff (which no doubt has scored pivots now) and didn't mention the cracked jewels. I'm assuming the pillar plate cap jewel is the one that is missing. Lots of work there yet to be done! Reminds me of a clock I repaired one time and it came back later with a strike problem. It was missing the warning lever and stop. Of course the owner said nobody had touched it. Don't you just love this profession? Oh, I have a bag of loose cap jewels. If you can't find one, give me the dimensions and I'll see if I have anything close.

Just curious... what exactly are the jewels or "rubis" made of these days?

Modern jewels are made of corundum - the same material that sapphire crystal is made of.

Artificial rubies have been used since (I think) the late 19th century, but not sure what materials have been used in that time.
