I would like to purchase a 1982 Breitling for myself as it is my birth year. Being unfamiliar with the older pieces, can anyone point me in the direction of something produced during this year that would be interesting?

This would be the period shortly after Ernest Schneider bought Breitling (name only, parts stock and manufacturing rights were sold to others) in 1979.

I think the only watches introduced in this period would be with quartz movements, the Pluton, Jupiter & Mars, the Tabarly and some others. Only in 1984 they went back to introducing watches with mechanical movements with the new Chronomat.

Very few watches at all in 1982, and certainly no way to definitively date a watch to 1982 - you were born too late

This is what I was thinking. I do not love any of the 1980s pieces anyway, but was just holding out hope there would be something worth while.

I've always wanted a birthyear Breitling (but now the only option I have is Rolex...

. . . he lists the Taberly line as coming out in 1981 and the GMT as introduced in 1982. Oddly, the catalogs from the 1980s, especially review the one posted here in the catalogs section, start the timeline in 1983 with the GMT. That has the infamously unreliable ESA movement, so it's difficult to recommend that.

I think you will be most happy with selecting a piece that you can best afford and like the functionality the best. I'm a strong advocate of the Navitimer 3300 - reliable and very functional. I think they are very affordable, too. You could have had one as a toddler.
