Looking at serial numbers on old Breitlings on here and E bay etc i have seen 560330 dated as 1943 also 505487 dated as 1940,so my serial of 462599 could be 1939 ? Any ideas.

Thanks Mike.

There are two issues at play:

1) Chronographs and non chronographs have different serial number ranges for each year

2) Before 1944 there is no reliable record of years

Your serial number could be a pre 1944 chronograph, a 1949 non chrono or a fake / frankenwatch (not suggesting that it is, but we have to open up the possibility).

Post some pictures (ideally dial, inside and outside caseback and movement) and we'll soon tell you!

Its a typical chonograph of that period with an unmarked bridge on a Venus 175 movement,it has a personal inscription dated 1944.I have read many times on here about no reliable records before 1945 so i wondered how people come up with these dates, are they just educated guesses ?
