There's something not right there.

I don't see too many problems with the watch when you look at it's constituent parts, but the serial number is very early for an 808 - these are more late 50s than this apparent 1954. The dial is from a second generation 808 - it has an arrow at 12 o'clock rather than two batons and that wasn't introduced until 1962.

Strange. What would be your explanation (theoretizing, of course) ? A fake ? Looks too good for that, doesn´t it ? Or somebody replaced the dial during the last 58 years ?
Step away or not ? Many questions, but I would really appreciate your advice, thanks, WatchFred

Well for a start we don't know whether the photos are of the same watch!

It's not an outright fake, but could well be a frankenwatch where the dial has been replaced with one from a later 808 - it does look like a genuine dial to me. The watch has definitely had work done - the crown and pushers are non original, and at least some of the hands are wrong.

The outer caseback looks right, and the movement looks correct, but that is very early for an 808 - I don't think that I have ever seen one as early as 54.

It has to be your choice to buy or not, if the price is right and 100% original doesn't matter then I think it's largely Breitling (crown and pushers were what the watchmaker could find), but as an original 808 I would be looking for something else.

thanks, Roff ! I do not feel too good about the seller, too. I will keep looking for the right affordable 808.

It's almost impossible to fake a Chronomat, since the features are so unique. The dial markers look all correct for a mid-1960s 808, but isn't there some strange ridges or tracks in the sub-registers.

That serial number inside the caseback is unambiguously 1954. The caseback is clearly marked like circa 1960s version. I don't see how all these pieces can fit together. I wonder if it is a mixture of images from different watches.

This one has me puzzled.

just to add to this: the seller has just sold this clear FAKE Breitling http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... K:MEWAX:IT (among other fakes), so I will definitely not take the risk to find out that this watch is just a virtual marriage of other authentic 808s.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the pushers and crown don't seem right either...
