Well, with very little confidence, I'm gonna say........

Fake.

Let's ignore the obvious unusual element (!) for now and stick to the normal tells - model and serial number. We have a very un Breitling like model number and no serial number.

It looks darn good though (albeit with some odd hands) so next I went for the patent number (508925). According to what I can find that's an application made in 1969 for a cap over a watch case. I can't find pictures, and it's a bit confusing.

Resorting to Google we find this - http://members.chello.nl/~h.mennink//wa ... Dugena.htm. The same patent seems to be used on some Speedy cases????

Could it be right - sure, but too many questions for me - and truly bizarre.

Actually I think it's all correct except for the paint job. There is a serial number on the back and the ref number is consistant for a Datora made in 1973. If you look at the sides of the watch it looks like it's sort of motly, like thick paint (we call orange peel here). The paint job theory would also explain the steel pushers and crown not matching. I hope the new owner, that dropped over a grand on it, doesn't clean it with anything stronger than mineral water.

The caseback looks NOS... it's still got some of that purple peel on it. The serial number and model number is both present... The wood design is very "interesting"... but looks like it's been applied a bit crudely...

Missed the numbers ontheback - long day.

I think that you are correct then, even Breitling didn't do anything this weird in the 70s!

Out of curiosity, would it be possible to remove that "wood" paint on the first post?

If it's just air brushed on paint then disassembly and a good chemical stripper should take care of it.
