Don't know if I'd do it now althogh I did request a course about 25 years ago when I was in the RAF.

I was turned down but a mate of mine was picked and chickened out!

We'll never know if I would or wouldn't have gone through with it.

Actually the reason for the helmet is not to prevent injury to the head.
It is to contain the leakage of brain material into a more manageable and confined area. It makes cleanup a lot easier. :D

The more you weigh the bigger the chute. Most of the modern chutes are the rectangle type. Very few if any sport jumpers use a round canopy anymore. As for the helmet, it is used, as stated to contain the brain matter.

I thought it was more to prevent possible injury from collisions with other divers.

very cool! had a chance to do this a couple years back on a friend's bd near pechanga. we were suited up, signed the waiver took the little course all ready and waiting but it was too windy and cancelled. never made it back, not sure if that's good or bad! :P
