Post subject:  Remembrance Day

Today is November 11th - this year marks the 90th anniversary of the first Remembrance Day when the armistice ending World War I was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month.

At the same time a survey was released here in Canada, where poppies are sold as they are in many places around the world, that said that many Canadians don't know about the significance of Remembrance Day and the poppy.

This year I have noticed a real reduction in the number of veterans selling poppies - and it's more personal to me this year as I come to terms with the fact that this may be my father's last Remembrance Day - he's a veteran of the campaigns in Europe and the Pacific in World War II.

More sadly there seem to be fewer and fewer people wearing poppies each year.

So please, whereever you are in the world, whatever your beliefs, please take a minute to remember the millions of people who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Soldiers, sailors and airmen don't cause war, they are just its victims.

Lest we forget.

I know this is kind of late posting on this topic. In remembrance of this day each year I share a sense of pride in the fact that both my Grandpa’s served in the Navy during World War II. Sadly they have both passed on, but they lived many years to tell their stories after the War and the attack on Pearl Harbor.

My Grandma shared a story this year from my Grandpa's journal after the ship he was on survived an attack. The story told of how he had to sleep on the deck of his ship for many nights after an attack that left the ships cabins where he slept destroyed and sealed off to stay afloat. His story told of their struggles to survive until they got help, and his respect for the others who were lost.

They were both great men and part of a generation they just don't make them like anymore. Even if it is a little late, I would like to thank all those who have made the sacrifice.
