iphone. 4S is still good in my books. Depending on where you are and if you want UHD downloads I would opt for an older model, if you can get one. The 5 is just too big for my use, but you might be different.

If your Telco has a good plan for downloads then maybe 4G might be the better option, but I seriously don't even use half the download I have. if you don't sue it or don't need it, then don't have it. Stay with something a little less bells and whistles and save some dollars on the way through.

I agree, I love my 16gb 4s. Sadly in the UK the 4s can only be had as an 8gb, not quite enough for me.

The iPhone for me also, I've got the Sony z1 and though there are good bits to it- expandable memory, 21mega pix camera, waterproof to 1m, it is nothing on my gf's 5s. It crashes, the charge point is just waiting to snap, the camera is not user friendly, you lose things in the expandable memory, so even though it was marketed as an iPhone killer - it most certainly isn't.

If I was buying my 5S 16gb again, I'd actually go for the one with more memory. I keep a lot of music on mine and it seems every time there is an update to the software, I don't have enough memory to download it. I end up having to delete a bunch of apps to free up memory and then reload them once the update has downloaded. It's not the end of the world, but kind of a pain.

Yeah man, 16gigs is quite small, memory fills up fast. I have a 5 64 gig, and still not enough room. If I had one gripe, it would be expandable storage

That is a real issue for me, no slots for extra capacity especially as the storage in Apple devices is pretty mean. I don't keep too much music on mine a but a few photos and my Zappa collection and it's all gone.

Absolutely right abgout this one Scott, those were the days....

But...

I'll cast my vote for the latest Korean machine (guess which  ).... for all the reasons that we have so often talked about and all the cons of the Apple products.... At the end of the day, it's, of course, a personnal decsion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Apple products have the favor of the American consumer (which would be logical) compared to the rest of the markets. Globally though, Samsung ( Oops, I gave myself away) is far ahead it's competitors having more than 33% of the market's share compared to the 15% of Apple's. Should be a reason, except personnal preference, don't you think?

I wondered if this thread would draw you out. :)

Apple's primary foothold for phones is the U.S. I have heard different reports as to why, but most focused on marketing overseas and a bit of a problem with "control issues" among the Apple folks, not surprising for them.

I will say, from the dialogue above, it may be important that the Galaxy phones have plug-in memory. That's a new issue. I haven't owned either one of them, contrarian that I can be, so I have no dog in the hunt. Had an HTC previously, fantastic for photos but among the last to get android upgrades and a little clunky with them. So far my Maxx has been butter-smooth, but I wouldn't want it any bit larger. If Apple does enlarge the 6 I do hope they don't go too wide on the screen.

I have an S4, it does what it does. Would switch to Apple next time if the package made sense, for my needs either works. The biggest thing that I could use right now is more battery life!

Easy. Put in an extended battery pack. A little clunky but ok & only slightly thicker. Or get a portable solar panel. Great for when there is no power to be had. Used the iPhone connector or lighting version for iPad & folds up when not in use.

One of the advantages and conveniances of the more advanced smartphones is how thin and light they are. If you make them chunky and heavier with a thicker battery pack you ruin the whole concept.

The newest Morphio Juice Pack cases are bareley bigger than a regular case and almost doubles the battery life. Really it's not cumbersome or bulky in any way.

My wife was given a hand-me-down Mophie and is trying it out now. The prior owner (who traded up from a 4S to a 5S swore by it. Fairly trim setup still, though the battery on my Droid Maxx just keeps going. I may have gone down to 30% after a day of screen-heavy use. Don't care for the camera, though.
