So Thursday i leave for my 6th trip to Ambergris Caye, Belize for my fishing trip. It is an amazing little island with fantastic fishing. Mostly Fly Fishing for Tarpon, Permit, and Bonefish. Once you get your eyes on that silver king on the water it becomes an addiction...and we all know how that goes!! I have had a lot of fun and the people are very nice. Has anyone here taken a trip there have another hidden gem that they like to frequent for great fishing trips? |

Am actually looking to retire to Ambergris Caye in a few years and starting to look at places now. Probably between the bridge and where the reef touches the island, and in a private place rather than a resort villa. It's a great place for sure - where do you stay? |

Nothing wrong with Ruby's - it's the same fishing as the posh places and in San Pedro you actually get to spend time with the amazingly friendly locals. |

Belize allows ex pats to enter their retirement program at 45 and pay no income tax ever so retirement may be a relative term, but there are certainly worst places to live. |

I knew there must be some reason (other than the Caribbean just being a pretty darn nice place to be!) I'm loving those financial rules.

Yeah it is a country that is very American friendly. There are also a lot of retired Canadians as well. Roff maybe we will run into each other down there one day. Last year I decided I was going twice a year from now on. Splitting the trip with another guy makes it around 2k for 5 nights and 3 days of fishing and all I can eat and drink down there! (Staying at Ruby's that is) Ambergris Caye was again the #1 island destination in the world on Trip Advisor. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

Absolutely. Although personally I wish that it wasn't rated so high - property prices keep going up and I'm not ready to retire for a few years! A place did just come on the market about 1 1/2 miles north of the bridge that is currently used as a vacation rental. Might look at whether we could do something with that and keep the business as is for a few years before making it a permanent home, but I don't have time to run a second business - especially so far away, and I'm not sure that the money works with effectively having it as a second place. I'm hoping that the north of the island opens up more for real estate which will take some of the pressure off prices! |

I've stayed at Captain Morgan and Coco Beach, next time we'll probably rent a home and focus more on trying to narrow down an area to buy in. Have eaten at El Fogon (I assume that's the place you mean) and enjoyed it a lot, haven't tried Waraguma. Robin's Kitchen is a favourite with us, golf cart seems to turn in there every time! |

It's south of town just past Banana Beach - maybe 2 miles from Ruby's, right on the road. |

Oops. I thought the thread was more for fishing. I Belize I was mistaken. haha. I have fished Costa Rica. Not too far away.
