but I love breitlings. I also have to fly. Anyone have any tips for overcoming the incredible sense of helplessness and claustrophobia.

Do something! I hate flying but find that by engrossing myself in a good book, watching a film or listening to music really does help. Wearing sound reducing headphones also helps to reduce the awareness of the plane's actions and sounds.

Also not big on flying, just flew to Disney when that plane shakes in the slightest, I want to let loose in my pants. I told my wife that my 2 favorite parts of the trip was when the plane landed each time.

Xanax works for me!

+1 on the xanax, but mostly cause it makes me sleepy, not because of a fear of flying. Sadly, I've been in the air so much for work at my last job that I used to find it relaxing cause nobody could bother me haha.

Not sure whether it works, but flying lessons as suggested above might not be a bad idea. I had lessons in school with the air cadets before I ever flew commercial and that gave me a love and appreciation of flying. Not sure that modern commercial jets can maintain the love, but it certainly doesn't bother me.

+2. Talk to your doc they can prescribe an even a lesser sedative. Worked for me and now I can fly without taking anything. Bring some movies, noise canceling headphones, and enjoy sitting in a pressurized man-made tube, traveling at 600 mph, 6 miles high, held up by thin pieces of extra strong aluminum.

Flying is still the safest way of transport. Remember that when getting on the plane. More chance of being hit by a bus than to crash. Even though it happens, it is quite rare taking in account how many flights there are worldwide per day.

Flying has always been considered the safest way to travel but I'd like to know the survival rate per accident of plane crashes vs car accidents or bus accidents etc. You are less likely to be involved in a plane crash than a car accident, but don't you think it is more likely to survive a car accident than a plane accident? That statement has always puzzled me that air travel is the 'safest' way to travel, I think it is the least likely transportation method to be involved in an accident but that doesn't mean it is the safest method in my opinion when the survival chances of a plane accident are quite small.

I agree with you. However in a moment of boredom at work, I've just Googled some stats and this is taken directly from www.Discovery.com website -

Accidents occur at a rate of one per 1.2 million flights, and the odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million [sources: Clarke, Ropeik]. The odds of dying in a car accident are around 1 in 5,000, so you're much more likely to die getting to the airport than you are flying in the plane [source: Ropeik].

But what if you're onboard that 1 in 1.2 million flights that ends up in an accident? Surprisingly, you're much more likely to walk away from an airline accident than you are to perish. In fact, a staggering 95.7 percent of people involved in plane crashes survive. Even in the most serious class of crashes, more than 76 percent survive [source: NTSB].

Personally I find that extremely hard to believe and I can only assume they are using very, very minor accidents to bolster the "crash" statistics. To me, the fact still remains that if you're in a plane and it crashes (e.g. runs into a mountain), you'll have a 99.9% chance of perishing.

Thanks for those stats Driver, that's very interesting. I agree with you that they must be including very minor accidents in those stats such as the plane nipping the wing of another airplane on the Tarmac.... or if you're flying in Captain Sully's plane! Miracle on the Hudson for those of you that don't get that reference.
