Anyone here own an F10 BMW 5 Series? Specifically a 520d M-Sport.

I'm on the cusp of buying a new 5, and at the moment I'm leaning towards the (shock horror) 2 litre diesel variant. A few years ago I would've been looking for a big 6 or 8 cylinder petrol version, but with the UK government taxing the motorist as never before, I'm seriously thinking about the 2 litre diesel. The performance is apparently "OK" : 184bhp, 380Nm of torque, 1-60 in 8 seconds (so I won't be challenging anyone off the lights!), but with the potential for upwards of 60mpg I'm feeling it's a fairly decent trade-off. It'll have all the kit (M Sport, adaptive suspension, professional media pack, etc, etc), so in that regard I'm 100% sure - it's just the engine size for such a large car that worries me a little.

Any real world owners out there with opinions to share?

PS - All you US-based guys are technically banned from commenting on engine size on account of the fact that you probably have larger engines in your lawnmowers! :poke: (I'm kidding, all opinions are welcome ).

Nah, my lawnmower is only a 28hp 900cc gas engine. My tractor has a 3.6 litre diesel though :poke:

No desire to derail, I'll get out of the way and let F14D_Tomcat respond.

Hmmmm, let me see. Currently the mower is 51 hp. Bore it out, Increase compression. New valves, lifters, cam job, re-tune to ultra high octane fuel (sorry D8, cannot call it petrol, I just can't..), add a free standing turbo with intercooler. Calculate.....
Nope, sorry the best I can do is around 120-135 bhp out of my mower. But it weighs nearly 400lbs., so on a pounds to hp ratio your BMW is...... oh, wait... reversed the numerator and denominator, my bad. :poke:
Good luck with the new wheels buddy!!!!

Driver,

being a big, no sorry, huge BMW fan myself and having been able to drive all sorts of BMW's I can tell you for a fact that the 2L Diesel engine is a very good one. In Belgium, big engines are punished by our lovely government so nobody drives any 6 or 8 cylinders anymore. 12 cylinders isn't even an option here... As you said, the car is large and heavy, and I fully understand your doubt of "only" having 184 bhp but it is really quite sufficient. The engine has quite a lot of torque for a 2L also so you will still be able to do a little drag race compared to any other brand 2L engines to be honest. If I were you Driver, I'd go and test drive one and I think you'll be quite satisfied about this "little" BMW diesel.

Hi

I have a 2011 320d M sport with a 184 bhp. i know its not the same model but theres plenty of power.
As for fuel consumption you are more likely to get 45 mpg than the sixty quoted.

If you get it enjoy.

Col.

Thanks for the opinion guys (yes, even Boney and Roff! ). Wim and Col's comments have set my mind at rest a bit more. I've test driven the 520d, but that's no real substitute for owning one longer-term.

I currently have a 320d, but the 163bhp version, and I've found it pretty dull, especially on the back of a number of straight 6's and V8's in the past.

@Col - yes, I know to take the official mpg figures with a pinch of salt, but either way I'll be expecting late 40's.... which is a load better than my 320d.

@mrcheatle - Yep, that's pretty much the one! Is that Carbon Black? If so, it's the same as mine will be, minus the black grill.
