For some it's Remembrance Day, for some Veterans Day and for some it's not commemorated at all, but today is the 95th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I - supposedly the "war to end all wars". I don't care about politics, religion or beliefs about who was right and who was wrong in different conflicts, war is a horrible thing where the pain and suffering is felt by millions of ordinary people. There are very few if any World War I veterans left now, since my father (a World War II veteran) passed away last year I have become painfully aware that there are fewer and fewer of that generation remaining. Regardless of whether your country formally recognises the day, take a moment to remember all of those who gave their lives in the worst circumstances because of the folly of governments. There is a poem that is read at services throughout the British commonwealth today that applies to all, it's called the Ode of Remembrance and is taken from a larger poem written by Laurence Binyon during World War I: They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam Forgive the indulgence, but this day means a lot to me, and I am sure to countless veterans and their loved ones. Lest we forget. |
