Post subject:  Emigrational Thoughts
Hey Breitling Maniacs alike, any of you guys who currently live in the U.S or abroad ever thought of emigrating to other continents?

I am currently heavily debating the possibility, I went to Italy this summer, and will apply for citizenship soon, given the Financial mess but also culture apart, just a thought.

Has anyone ever emigrated to another country or continent for any reason?

I have been thinking of moving somewhere like a caribbean island. Perhaps in the next year or two... my business can be run from anywhere with an internet connection.

Plus I'm a certified scuba instructor so... it kinda makes sense ;)

I came to Canada from England 11 years ago, and don't regret it for a second. The first few months were tough trying to find jobs (and then moving from job to job because as an unemployed new arrival you can't be too picky initially).

The process wasn't too bad - points based system and if you are a professional who can speak the language and don't have any skeletons then it's relatively straight forward, though time consuming.

Financially you have to look beyond the pure numbers and consider relative costs - for example if you have to work for 6 hours now to earn enough take home money for the weekly grocery shop will that increase or decrease in the new country? What about utilities, housing, travel, etc - absolute dollars aren't terribly relevant.

You also have to consider quality of life, and that's much more subjective.

Well we have our share of taxes, and in the last 11 years imbecilic would have been kind for some of the governments we've had, but no - on balance I don't miss it.

Cost of living is a fraction of what it is in the UK - when I first came across my salary dropped about 15% but my cost of living dropped almost 50%, I now own a bigger piece of land than the size of the entire village (of 1,000 people) that I grew up in simply because there is so much more space, and I'm far enough away from the cities to be immune to chavs and their Canadian cousins.

Money is often a motivator for people to emigrate, and it was certainly a major factor for me, but ultimately it's the lifestyle and lefe quality that have to be the determining factors. I'm a country kid who remembers Kent when it was the 'Garden of England', and in Canada I can still be in the middle of the country, surrounded by what's important to me and have an (almost) reasonable commute.

Quality of life is far more important to me than money, although (self-evidently) the more money you have relative to the cost of living, the better your quality of life is. For a 50% drop in cost of living, I'd gladly take a 15% drop in wages..... and maybe more.

Unfortunately, much as I dislike certain aspects of the UK, I don't quite feel like I'm at that point in my life where I could up-sticks completely and leave. Maybe one day though.......

I made the move from Sweden to us in 93,basicly because i could not take the winters anymore,cold,snow sleet and damp and dark,so i moved to sunny California,great ok the taxes are the same or worse if you figure property tax and so on.Well a freind of mine called from New jersey in late 95 and needed help with a racecar he couldnt figure out,so he wanted help,i get there westart talking and he talks me in to moving to Fn Jersey,just as dark damp and Fn cold as Sweden,however qality of life and like what your doing means more,go figure

HEY Mario,if you plan on moving to an island in the caribbean may i suggest you check out Curacao,great island even have a good Breitling AD,and a decent dragrace facillity,great people,resturants,scuba,fishing,restaurants,plus realestate prices are cheap,it is a Dutch Island 8)

Yes,you can own/buy property there with no problem,local language is Papimiento wich i guess is a cross between spannish,portugese,french,english.Most people speek english and dutch.

Mario, you're a lucky guy if you can take your business with you. If it wasn't for my job (which I do actually like) I would be out of this place like a shot. I would definitely move interstate, and possibly overseas.

Wow guys thanks for writing back! I will actually be trying the move to Italy in early November, and if it all goes well, I will stay for good!

Everyone else- who is retiring or is soon there best of luck to all of you, i am not going anywhere now or later so this is not goodbye!

Chavs hahah interesting term dont remember who wrote it...
