We've had a couple of single malt threads in the past as I know we have a few whisky fans here, so I just thought I'd share a superb one that I had at the weekend.

I'm personally a big fan of really smoky, peated single malts, so most of the whisky I drink are the likes of Laphroaig (both the 10 y/o and Quarter Cask), and Talisker. However, the other day I was out with a few friends and I tried a Speyside whisky from Scotland's smallest distillery (just two employees!) - Benromach Peat Smoke. Normally I'm not a fan of Speyside whiskies but with this one the key is in the name - Peat Smoke!

With a dash of water (which it can take as it's bottled at 46%) it's got a huge but also mellow smoky nose to it (as you would expect), but the taste and finish is somehow much "softer" than a Laphroaig. I'm not one for flowery descriptions when whisky (or wine or beer) tasting, but what I can say is that it's distinctly different from the peated single malts from the islands. Not better, not worse, just different - but in a very nice and enjoyable way. It's apparently only 7 years old, but IMO you wouldn't know it, so it shows that age isn't everything.

Basically, if you like smoky single malts, give this one a try. :thumbsup:

Good call D8 - I'll look for it. I too am a big fan of peaty single malts.

I've been really really enjoying Ardbeg lately. Replaced my Bowmore and Laphroig quarter cask with it and it immediately shot up to one of my favorites. Smooth, mellow and not hugely peaty - perfect!

Ardbeg's a very fine drop indeed, Tim. You've got good taste there! :thumbsup:

If you like that, you should also give Lagavulin a go if you get the chance. The standard 16 y/o is excellent.

Lagavulin might be arguably my all time favorite single malt - that stuff is awesome. Pricey but understandably though.

I really appreciate how many how great single malts there are. At home I also currently have Bunnahabhain, and I like plenty of others. I had the opportunity to try a Japanese single malt (Hakushu) and I liked it. Smooth, mellow, not peaty at all but well worth trying. Have you had he opportunity?

I've also been getting into the Bourbon whisky's. There's definitely some good one's out there.

Nope.

Technically it is even illegal to buy wine in British Columbia and bring it back to Ontario - all alcohol imports have to come through provincial government controlled channels. Only exception is personal duty free allowances.

Wow, that is insanity. I'm guessing for government tax purposes but very aggressive. You should consider moving :lol:

Lovescotch.com has Benromach for about 85 dollars a liter. I think they only ship to the US though.. I'm gonna get a bottle and try it out for myself, I'm a huge whiskey drinker. Namely JW.

I agree Driver, the Benromach Peat is a great drop for the price! They also do some other wood finish ones, I quite liked the Pedro ximenez and the burgundy.
I picked up a bottle of the Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 'The Peat Project' last week, not as good as their octomore, but still a great peaty drop!

As for your beloved Laphroaig... I agree! Here's one of my pics from last yr :-)

Talisker fan here. I didn't think a Speyside could have peaty flavor due to the different climate near the river Spey. Have to check it out.

Current tipple - very nice indeed, not peaty and only slightly smoked. Very refined.

I've not tried any other Benromach whiskies as I've not generally a Speyside fan, but I'll definitely look out for those you mention.

Balvenie have been doing some great stuff recently, as have old pultney. Well worth checking out the peat monster by compass box for a good price / peat ratio.

I was discussing with a good friend to buy a cask from one of the smaller destilleries. Then let it mature for a few years, to get an uncommon age. Then bottle it with our own label. We just have not decided, which distillery to ask, but I think we have to decide that on a trip to scottland....
