Don't get me wrong, that 458 is a great car. It's got all the luxury you would want in a sports car. A Lamborghini is for people who don't care to much about all those little extras, but it would eat that 458 for lunch and still be hungry for more. No competition at all in the performance department. This is coming from some one that has owned both.

We had both with us on a weekend where we raced some Porsches in Imola a few years ago. I remember being rather impressed with the 458s way of getting around. Sure had the Gallardos look old. The Aventador in turn may be another beast (closest to the track I've ever seen that was the paddocks), but then, it's not exactly the same price-range either.

Certainly depends on ones driving style a lot though, so YMMV.

The aventador is almost twice as much. I'm comparing it to the murcielago, and you can pick one up for a lot less than the 458. I guess it all just boils down to what you are looking for. The 458 is the sexy sophisticated Italian that is surprising fast for a Ferrari. On the other hand you have the not so subtle lamborghini that is ment to be pushed to the limit and past. Now that I've experienced both I prefer the thrill of the bull over the luxury Italian that happens to also be fast.
