Looking to pull the trigger (not literally) on a pistol. However, I'm a vigin on the topic so I wanted to ask my fellow members that have experience for some advice. I want something to keep in the home that even the wifey would feel comfortable shooting. I have shot guns before (45mm I believe), and it was waaaaay to much gun for MY needs. Looking for something simple from Berretta, possibly. Advice is appreciated! FYI, please do not turn this thread into an opinionated discussion on the "gun" issue! |

From my experience, when I used to take women and novice shooters to the range, they found my Beretta 92 9mm the most comfortable and easiest to shoot. It's the metal frame and slide that absorbs a lot of the recoil hence easier. Usually the polymer frame guns are a bit trickier to shoot IMO. If it's good enough for our armed forces and countless law enforcement, then it's good for me too. I had the compact version which was a little easier on the grip too, but the full size should be fine as well, depending how big your wife's hands are. You might maybe even consider something a bit smaller too, such as something chambered in a .380 or even a .38 revolver. |

I own several hand guns and rifles as well. Go with a glock, affordable, dependable, and easy to work with. Just a all around great gun and they make them in just about any caliber you want. My wife shoots mine at the range and says its the one she feels most comfortable with. I guess at the end of the day just like anything else it's what your feels most comfortable with. Go to your local gun range, they should rent guns so you can try a few on and see how they feel. Or you could just throw caution to the wind and get something like this, my end of the world gun. |

.38 revolver is the easiest to shoot and fail safe. if you want a little more versatility i highly recommend the gen 4 glock 19 (9mm). feel free to pm me with specific questions. i'm a career jarhead... |

I would go with a ruger LCR in 357 you can always just shoot 38s out of it if you want it to be a little more tame. Fail safe no hammer no safety just pull the trigger perfect for those who don't practice all the time. Clearing the action on a semi auto in a life a death situation can be quite an issue for some. |

You've got to try them, as they all feel a least a bit different in the hand, and that will necessarily vary with the hand, and the recoil of the different calibers. I second the motion about trying out different guns at a range. For home defense, a shotgun is always something to consider. |

My friend swears by his Glock 27. He has two and one is always with him at arms reach. He keeps clips everywhere in his house too. He says that it's a smooth shooter and in .40 cal it's gonna stop anything he hits. He shot a porcupine with one protecting my chocolate lab while we were visiting. I on the other hand prefer knives.. They never run out of bullets! |

Just to weigh in, I would not recommend the Glock 27 to your wife. The .40 cal is a "snappy" round, and can be difficult to shoot, especially in the subcompact 27. I would recommend the Glock 19, which is a 9mm. It is compact, versatile, makes both a great home defense pistol and a CCW pistol as well. Just my .02 |
