I was reading's Roff's resurrected post on buying a laptop and it prompted this thread. l have been a PC guy for years and years. I swear by them and at work it's all I use... until I bought a Macbook Air, and let me tell you the thing is awesome! I'm not going to write a full review because you can look those up online and those writers have more experience on judging what is what. I can and will tell you, that so far (about a month now) I absolutely love this thing. The portability, 7 hour battery, light weight, ease of use etc. are all welcome attributes. The machine so far has worked flawlessly, maybe there is something to when a manufacturer builds the hardware and writes the software that everything just works. I have loaded Office 11 for Mac and it recognizes every file I have thrown at it so I can use this for work when I travel. Now, I do have an iPad and an iPhone (the former seems to be getting a lot less use BTW) so I am somewhat used to the interface as it is very similar to the portable versions. But when all three of these work together to transfer data (pictures, movies, music, files) it is very cool and it does "Just Work". I'll tell you that when I plug my phone into this computer it wants to know if I would like to sort pictures by faces, events, timelines etc. Anyway if you do happen to buy into the ecosystem of the iPad and iPhone a Mac may just show you how to put them all together. Anyone else make the switch, or just use a Mac in general? I'm still learning and always looking for more tips, tricks, and software. |

I hated my last mac 13", but I just got a new 15" macbook pro that im really liking. Theyve always been well made, but ive never really gotten along with the OS. Mountain Lion has been great so far though. Everything is just sooo smooth and refined. Its nice to have all the apple stuff integrated as well. Ive got a tiny 13" samsung that I still travel with though, since the mac pro is a freaking brick. All in all, im still a PC guy, but with this crappy new thing called windows 8... |

I tried liking macs... but am still a PC man. Can't give up the ability to tinker and replace parts and upgrade when I want  Agreed though, windows 8 on a desktop isn't that great, so I've stuck with w7. Though on a tablet (e.g. Windows Surface Pro) the OS is slick and functions perfectly. |

I've had an iMac for about 4 years now and love it. I haven't had any issues with it, except that I filled up the hard drive. As Dr J said, you can't easily tinker with them so I've resorted to an external drive. I'll take that over a PC any day. The idea of constantly defragmenting and even reformating a PC sends chills up my spine. I read an analogy once; a mac is like a TV, just turn it on and it works. |

phsss I returned to my office after a summer break and found my pc gone and a very pretty looking machine on my desk. Nice mac thing, 27" Screen. No bulgy external things. Oh and when I need to do our accounts I can use a thing which boots me into a windows page where my Sage software works. My nerdy nephew, who works for me, upgraded the entire office. All of it works. We swap share files without any drama. Sending stuff to clients is easy as we can choose what type of file to send. So now...I have an iphone 5. Ipad a laptop which is an apple thing, not sure what....and in my house an apple tv device, which is bloody brilliant!!!!!! My wife has an ipad and iphone now too. We are in our 50's and it's all so totally easy to use. Love the streaming to our in house audio visual setup. BUT in my play den, for my flight sim, I have a very hi spec PC. Which is perfect. And much easier to manipulate than Apple stuff. Just my 2c worth D |

I also recently switched to a MacBook Pro and would never go back, also got an iPad and iPhone, loving the apple products, I was tired of getting viruses all the time on my HP with windows. |

Seems like I've gone full circle on this. A long, long, time ago... we were assigned the early MacIntosh for work, mainly for project engineering type functions. When I transferred into the lab for test development work we had PCs. Used a PC laptop at home for years, latest software Windows 7 (skipped Vista, thank goodness). Just this December my wife retired and took my Laptop PC so I decided to get a 13" MacAir. So here I am typing on a Mac again, the very first real system I started on. Since I now mainly use it for internet, pictures, personal files, etc. and not any hardcore engineering tasks, it works great. No need for hard drives, CD drives, anything with moving parts these days, ha! I did migrate to the iPhone 4s a while back and my wife uses an iPad, so we have the full product range now .

Well sco I have to agree totally. I got my MacBook Air (11") about 17 months ago and love it to bits! Normally I would just manage with a fairly cheap and low spec Windows laptop and be buying RAM after 6 months and then replacing it after a year or so. Now with my MacBook it still feels just out the box and I can't imagine replacing it in the foreseeable future. I went for extra storage and RAM to start with and have no complaints at all. I still have to look up how to do stuff 'under the bonnet' as it were but apart from still not knowing if there is a delete key (could look it up I suppose) is is a joy to use. I started with an iPod years ago (1st gen mini) and now use my iPhone 4S, iPad (1st gen) and MacBook all the time. As others have said - the ease with which they sync is excellent. I am currently holding an 'IOU' from my birthday last October which is for a new MS Surface Pro - if they ever get launched in the UK - and I want to see what it's like as a replacement for the old iPad. That said I can see me either getting fed up waiting for MS to make it available or buying the latest iPad Retina anyway as it will fit right in. Never thought that old iPhone I started with three or four years ago would lead me here! Now for a 27" Mac for my new office.........
