as safe as you can get as a buyer. make sure you are not alone when unpacking the item, so you'd have somebody to witness should the contents of the package not be correct, just to be uber-safe.

It's not Paypal that's the issue, it's who's on the other end of your transaction. That's why I only deal with people who I am extremely sure will send me what I expect. AD of course would be the first choice, than either a well established grey seller, or private sale where there's a lot of history/data for me to check out. Unless you're buying something that's somewhat obscure I see no reason to take chances. Generally the bigger the savings the more risk there is, and I'd sooner just spend the bit extra and be sure.

about 1,400 paypal transfers, watch-related and electronic components.
1 crook who did not ship, took me three weeks to recoup the funds in full.
1 watch that did not correspond to description (and I am talking vintage here, so lots of grey areas),
2 weeks and an expertise by Craig, 100 percent refund.
0 loss.
definitely A LOT more secure than handing over my credit card to a an unknown waiter in a restaurant, probably safer than handing my card to a salesperson at an AD.

I don't know if I would do it again. I had a horrible experience with PP as a seller. The thread is on here somewhere. I contemplate selling a couple watches now and then, but I was so scarred from my last experience that I don't know if I ever want risk it again.

the question was about safety for the buyer. pp can be hell for the seller, no doubt.

PayPal will, by default, side with the buyer in almost all cases. There are a few scam scenarios and even if you follow their protocol, such as getting a signature for over a $250 item, it doesn't mean much if the buyer is a skilled scammer. At best you may get sent back an empty box or an item different than yours (but something to match the weight). If you are a seller, I advise having a bank account you use for PayPal only and transferring those funds ASAP to avoid them making a withdrawal from your account if a seller begins a scam process. Once the buyer scam process starts with PayPal, you will be helpless and will watch your money be on 'hold' for a few months and 9/10 times it is then given to the buyer. The disclaimers you make in eBay...PayPal doesn't care. While I advise using them, PayPal does not take this into account. If you lose enough money, you can then hire an attorney. Generally, PayPal makes some 'magic' happen to avoid a costly lawsuit. I've known a variety of people who had to go this far and none had to go to actual court as PayPal 'handled' the situation prior.

Escrow can add security to a PayPal transaction, but Escrow scams exist as well and Escrow isn't cheap. Additionally, some legit buyers are uncomfortable with it.

Registered Mail can as well when you have a Postal Service worker inspect the item and seal it on site. Again, it ain't perfect.

MoneyGram is a scammer favorite for sellers. If you are a buyer and a seller wants MoneyGram, if they aren't well known to be legit, run. MoneyGram scams on NA and EU nations are common, usually from sellers claiming to be somewhere in Asia (not always true though).

My advice is know the buyer if possible. If you do eBay, require a buyer have feedback. Check their feedback history. If they bought ten cheap items in a few days, that is a red flag. Know your seller. If they sold ten cheap items in a few days, that is also a scam, or if they have sold a few cheap items and list all at once multiple high dollar ones. If it doesn't feel right, back out. Most of the time PayPal runs smoothly. But when it doesn't, it usually (but not always) works out in the buyer's favor.

Paypal used to have the propensity to lock accounts at will, regardless of the amount of money in the account, nowadays i've not heard of this for a while. Escrow Europe is superb, you can actually pick up a link through ebay itself , hence the right address. But as someone said its not cheap. I've conducted a few 3000-4000 quid deals with it. Easy and good.

Information on the web about PayPal nightmares indicate it is not always safe.

I just sent payment last night for my first Breitling. It was originally an auction that ended so I made an offer to the seller. I researched Paypal's buyer protection policies and, as others have said, its about as safe as you can get without going over the counter at an AD.

Still, it definitely feels like I am rolling the dice on a purchase this size. Relying on pictures, paying up front - makes me nervous. But I am relying in my faith in my fellow man (haha), and as much due diligence as I could put together. Great ebay feedback, googled personal email address and name, etc.

Will let you know how it turns to at the end of this week.
