Anybody have any antidotes for this? I'm always anxious on long flights, worrying about a 40,000ft drop. Never taken anything before but any of you know of anything that could help me.

Booze is not an option for me when flying and trying to get any kind of sleep is impossible.

And before the smartbacksides come with the 'don't worry its safer than crossing the road' don't bother, at least I can make that decision for myself! :D

Any help much appreciated!

What exactly are you afraid of? An airliner will glide nicely, and far (from high altitude), even with the engines shut down, if that will help.

I used to be afraid of flying, but overcame it by flying, and getting my pilot's license. Now I'm an instructor. And I can relax on airline flights, though I hate the inconvenience of security, etc.

Call your doc, he/she can prescribe you with a low dose anxiety relief pill. I used to be anxious flying, then I discovered first class and now I love flying. Throw on my noise canceling Bose headphones and watch a movie in a big leather seat. Try not to think about sitting inside a missile, traveling nearly 550 MPH, and 45,000 feet above the ground while having no clue about the pilot's credentials or if he could be gettin a little action from a hot stewardess while the plane is on autopilot.

First class definitely makes life better. Its seriously like night and day.

A few months ago I had an 8 hour flight so I took an ambien when I got on the plane. I figured id been out like a light, but when we landed and were exiting, the lady next to me knew my name and thanked me for keeping her company. LOL.

I can only add: You will loose Your fear of flying when You have the yoke or the stick in Your own hands. Don't worry too much, get someone to take You on a one hour joyflight around Your area on a day with perfect sunny wether and no wind. (Even in scotland there will be one or two each year!) Nomrally, when You are airborn for a short while amd feel well and calm enough, Your pilot will ask You to take over the stearing (at least I normally do that when I have a pax on the copilot seat) and You can try out the aircraft reactions.

It is a lot more fun, sitting in the (co)pilotsseat of an aircraft, than sitting on the other side of the cockpit door.

I am not afraid of flying, but am afraid of crashing! I fly to NZ from the UK quite often. I hate take off and the last 10 mins of the flight when the plane engines seem to go quiet. I busy myself with my camera or concentrate on reading a really interesting book or find some other task that totally absorbs me, it works for me.

It was on my mind initially but now after countless trips it just feels like getting on a bus.

I have the same fear. I actually just took a new job as a Consultant which will force me to fly quite a bit (at least 2 trips a month) so I better overcome it soon. I always feel that the build up to the fly is worse than the flight itself. Once I get into the air I can somewhat relax. It may be the safest form of travel, but a crash is almost always certain death. That's what scares me.

Actually, there are courses you can follow to help you tame your fear. They are organized by many airlines, among others.

And if something is dangerous in flying, statistically, it's the take-off and and landing phase. Runway incursions comes in third.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy aka "fake it till you make it". Just act as if it's no big deal and it will no longer be an issue. There may be some bumps in the road, but if you practice it'll be a non-issue in 6 months.

Thanks for all the advice....I think!

Yes 'crashing' is my fear and I know its all in the head but I do become very anxious when flying. I've flow loads of times, probably 6 or 7 flights a year for the last 10yr and always at least 2 long haul flights among them. I can just never overcome the problem so thinking to go to the doc and get some pills!

Figure out why you are so afraid to die. Once you come to terms with the fact you certainly will, you won't be so afraid of life.

Do what you have to do. If that means a moderate tranq then go for it. Just don't drink. ;)

Justin is right - it isn't the fear of crashing, it is the fear of dying. There is a difference.

My fear of flying is being in coach for more than 2 hours!

In all other respects I am normal. Like driving in the mountains I must be the driver and never the passenger. Not at all like yours, eh?

The illusion of control.
