The UK doesnt have a dedicated 'secret service' as such, but members from the police and areas of the armed forces are used to protect important members of the government when needed etc.

So where did James Bond work? You mean it wasn't real?

@Joe Dick Tracy is alive and well and working here! https://www.sis.gov.uk/

I dont think MI5 and MI6 would be very pleased to be referred to as a UK version of the secret service, considering that the secret service are basically body guards!

Some yes and some are dressed as plain clothes civilians to avoid detection. I wouldn't ask many more questions about the topic, you never know who is watching or wondering why the question is being asked.

The U.S. Secret Service agents are trained as Treasury Enforcement Agents, called "Special Agents", and deal with investigating counterfeiters and some other responsibilities, as well as Presidential security, which involves more than simply guarding a body.

I believe MI5 is analogous to the Foreign Counter-Intelligence (FCI) function of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and MI6 is analogous to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). As you point out, these are quite different missions.

The U.S. Secret Service has plainclothes and uniformed personnel. I think "long black coats" would stick out a lot more than the agency would wish.
