I took some pics of my african cichlid tank last night. Thought I would share.

Thanks. I did the tank myself. I had a friend help me with knocking out the wall and framing it out and another friend built the bar. It was a reef tank, but it became a chore and my utility bills were outrageous. |

In a previous job i worked for Sydney Aquarium. so this is my tank...   At home i've had everything from salt water to goldfish. at the moment a pretty heavily planted Tropical. Here are a couple of rough shots...

I've always wanted to try a planted tank but after years of keeping reef tanks, I want something that requires less maintanence. Are they a lot of work to keep going? |

Mine's not really much work; about 1/2 hr a week. Certainly much less than when i had marine tanks. I've got a pretty basic set up with it; just a Fluval 304 filter and two lights above. I do a 1/4 water change each week and let the plants grow wild and then once a month give everything a hair cut. That takes about another 15 minutes on top of the water change. I've just got community fish in it these days; tetras etc. The shot below's not a very good one; tank was a bit of a mess and hadn't had much love but it's a pretty fair representation of what it looks like. since then i've layered things a bit better and the grass to the right is marching left.  There's a great website called "The Planted Tank". Some really beautiful planted tanks. This is one of my faves.

I was running CO2 and then i thought I'd have a crack without it to simplify the tank and it voila! Seemed to make no real difference. So now I'm without it. Don't even use fertiliser anymore; just fish poo! The plants still grow faster than i can trim them. |

Quite impressive guys, I've always admired them but never really had the chance or the space  to have one. It must surely keep good company and help you relax from a day's hard work.

I have a Juwel 180 Vision, stocked with long fin Angel Fish. 10 in total. Lighting unit has gone in it. Nightmare. |

I initially started with a strictly Malawian tank then successfully added Tanganyikans to the group. I ended up with Frontosa, Peacocks, Haps, Mbuna, Neolamps and others co-existing peacfully in my 135 gallon. I now have a saltwater tank but wish I could go back to Cichlids.

My 125 reef at the office just took a dump after having it setup for 10yrs. I'm going to switch it over to a hap/peacock tank. It's just hard to get rid of the fish I have in there now. They're like my pets. I'm trying to find them a good home. |

A Hap/Peacock tank will be nice. You can stock all show males to keep the aggression down. It's strange how fish can become a part of the family. Find them a good home. |

I used to do the AGA conference and everything! I used to be a Marine biologist and Project Manager for a company out of Europe and the Middle East. These days I don't have anything at home, and work in a different industry, but own a small company that works on large custom aquariums. This thread makes me want to go get something small for my desk. I miss my tanks! Anyone know of a cool desktop size tank these days for a low maintenance setup? Like Crypts etc. Thanks guys

Look into getting a nanocube. It's self contained and come in a bunch of sizes. |
