Why do people type their email address: joeblow (at) gmail (dot) com???? Why not just type it out so I can cut an paste the email into my email??? Is this to prevent spam? It's the only logical thing I can think of.

specialized webcrawlers search the web, storing each and every e-mail address , sort them , delete the duplicates and then lists with e-mail addresses are sold . few years ago a typical list with 10.000 addresses went for a few dollars. So they're making money gathering your info AND they're making money sending out spam

And you don't think that the people who are smart enough to write webcrawling programs are smart enough to write an algorithm that can identify joeblow (at) gmail (dot) com and translate it to joeblow@gmail.com??

I see your point.... but I guess they are not smart enough then because I have yet to get spammed on my gmail since I changed it a few years back and now using (at) and (dot).

Probably they are , but there's too many variables/ways of hiding your e-mail to take into account , and why make it difficult if you catch 95% ?

joeblow (at) gmail (dot) com
joeblow (@) gmail (dot) com
joeblow (@) gmail (.) com
joeblow at gmail dot com
joeblow at gmail.com
joeblow@gmail (dot) com
joeblow@gmail dot com

etc etc

Gmail has quite sophisticated spam filters in place as well, that helps enormously

I do the same if I place a craigslist ad (no, not that kind) and my phone number. Ill write it out as "Eight one 8 six 3..." etc.

The webcrawlers are definitely smart enough. You're not seeing the spam in your gmail because gmail has *very good* spam filtering technology.

I don't bother cloaking my email and I don't get spam either.
