Hi all,
Unsure if anyone will be interested, but thought post my home refurb/ extension diary up here for you to see :-)
No new watches for me for a LONG while!

I will update as I go, hoping / needing to be in by July, as I have my first child on the way

Enjoy!

Good evening all!

I've been a long time lurker on these pages, not posted much though - until now! I'm hoping that starting this thread will encourage me to get this project finished and keep the updates coming for you all.

So, a bit of background,I'm 31, live in Cheshire ,a first time buyer, not scared of a bit of DIY, like to think I'm a quick learner and have a pretty flexible job that affords me more spare time your average 9-5 office bod. And I'm about to take on the project below.

The house is structurally sound, it needs a lot of interior updating, rewire, boiler, plaster to every room, bathroom, kitchen, etc I'm also adding a contemporary extension which will house on open plan kitchen/ lounge/ diner and the majority of my av kit.
AV kit consists of - kef 3005 se, yet to be decided amp, philips aurea3 40" LCD, sky hd, Philips Bly ray player and an apple tv.

Let's break up all the words with a few pics
:)

That is a "laylight" according to the surveyor, quite common in Edwardian houses apparently. There are two VERY small skylights in the roof above it so as to let light in to the otherwise dark stairwell. I love it, and will be keeping it, other half hates it:grin:

Hope you're all still with me here, apologies the pics aren't great, I need to find my dslr charger, these are from my iPhone. Anyway, now for the more exciting bit, what the plans are :-D

My brother is an associate director architect so I'm very lucky to have him on hand to help project manage this, not to mention come up with the design in the first place.

I hope the post hasn't bored anyone, feel free to comment or ask any questions you may have.
I'd appreciate any info on controllable lighting systems, once I've finished stripping down to brick, the rewire will get done and I figured I mayaswell get that done at the same time, and cat6 cabling too.

One last thing, I'm hoping to be in by the end of June so you won't have too long to wait until the finished product!

Thanks all

Jim

Wow good luck with it. Nice looking house. Watch out for your timing as these things ALWAYS run over. More so important on you as the New arrival be more or less on time! Kitchen and all furniture would be right up my alley!
Best of luck with it and the New arrival! Will keep a close eye to see how you are getting on and i hope you have time to update us.

Well, good luck to you Jim.

Here's one more idea if you haven't yet submitted the renovation plans. Just keep in mind to add ceiling to floor windows all around the Garage.

For those that are interested - here's todays update :-)

Well, managed to get a few bits done today. Now have a full week off work to really get my teeth stuck in.
Found some incredible wall paper in the back bedroom :-)
Image
stripped the whole hall stairs and landing, plaster is in surprisingly goof nick actually, also stripped out the master bedroom, which wasn't such a great story. Lots of damp on the chimney stack, most of the joists above are rotten and the lathes basically collapsed whilst removing the plaster from the walls. Not ideal, but certainly sortable.

Image

on the plus side, i found two fireplaces :-D

I also started taking the bathroom back to brick, never done this before and REALLY underestimated both the amount of mess this makes and the weight of it. Will be finishing this off tmrw and will post another update.

Cheers all

Jim

Wow, interesting findings. And wall paper of course. Pity you can't recuperate it.

It's not that bad! The idea is to keep as much of the original building as I can, not demolish it entirely!

Awesome undertaking mate!

I've been doing a bit of renovation myself recently (much more minor that yours - just replacing the bathroom, the en-suite and the downstairs cloakroom) and it all takes an age longer than expected.

I love these sort of projects, so keep the updates coming and good luck with it all!
