Just enjoyed a private single malt tasting session with a couple of mates, and had a chance to try the Glenfiddich 12 year old, 15 year old and 18 year old in quick succession. I'd had the 12 a number of times and I'd tried with 15 as well, but never had the 18 before so was really looking forward to it. Trying them one after each other really shows the different characteristics, but I have to say (somewhat surprisingly) I actually really prefer the 12 year old. I was expecting the 18 to be really special, but to me at least, I kept getting an undertone of a slightly vomit-like taste from it! Not nice at all IMO.

Then again, my favourite Scotches are the big smokey and peaty numbers from Islay, like Laphroaig, so maybe my palate isn't quite as tuned to the less robust single malts.

Not really big on Glenfiddich, had the 18 year old once - in a bar in Aberdeen and don't recall it being particularly memorable. Drinking a rather nice Balvennie 17 year old peated cask and ighly recommend that!

I've tried each. I didn't mind the 18, smoother but less flavor on the palate, though I'm not a big fan of 'Fiddich overall. Personally, I'm really liking some of the Glenmorangie variants, Nectar D'or and Quanta Ruban. Big fan of Glengoyne, even the 10, and my standard at a bar is either a Macallan 12 or Talisker 10, but I've got some Talisker 18 at home for special occasions. Too good for my own good.

I'm currently enjoying a rather nice Springbank 18yr. But I still prefer Talisker! Love the 57 North. And the 25yr is really really nice.....and expensive.

My business partner named his Daughter Talisker!

My favourite is Glenmorangie followed closely by Glen Turret,

I've also found that I prefer the younger 12 year single malts to the more senior 15 or 18 year malts - perhaps my palate hasn't 'matured' sufficiently enough yet .

@Driver8 - If you're a big Islay fan, try some Bowmore Darkest 15. It makes Laphroaig cask strength seem like a Lowland!

Yes Twotone but rather than just Scotch, we're talking about something much more special - malt whiskey . Not blends like Grouse, Johnny Walker and the likes but good and true malt whiskeys. Mmmmmmmm

I'm not into Glenfiddich (not my taste) and I can honestly say that I'm not sure whether it's a blend or true malt - someone may be able to enlighten me on that .

Yes, Glenfiddich is a single malt. And, scotch snobbery being what it is, they spell it "Whisky". The stuff is an acquired taste, but I can tell you from when I visited Scotland, the good stuff can warm you up from the most raw North Sea winds.

Thanks for pointing that out Scott - being English, IMO my original spelling of Whiskey was correct . Oh, I feel I ought to point something out to you too. The Scots hate being called 'Scotch' by the way .

Well, I happened to be round the same mate's house earlier to today and felt compelled to try the Glenfiddich 18 again, just to be sure, and I actually found it a bit more palatable today. I think my taste-buds must've been "compromised" by the several other whiskies we'd tried beforehand the other day! That said, I still prefer the 12 if I had to choose, and none of the Glenfiddichs will ever be a real favourite of mine, but the 18 wasn't quite a bad as I first thought.

@Davey - The Talisker 18 is very nice indeed. And I like the 10 as well, but I've not managed to try either the 25, the Distiller's Edition or 57 North yet. The 57 North is pure rocket fuel isn't it?? I feel more than a little water may be required with that one!
