Thanks Andy.. Part of the reason I wanted to consider going to a dedicated server was so that I would have all the resources for myself... or I had also considered going with Media Temple and using their Dedicated Virtual server.. which gives you dedicated performance in a easier to manage package.. but I have heard about outage problems with them as well...

Thanks! I'm desperately trying to get all the painting done.. but hasn't been going well.. we had unexpected company last night spending the night so no painting got done, and I have to work during the day. Still just primer on the walls, and drop-sheet on the Travertine tile. Speaking of which i need to find out if i can restore the Travertine a bit.. the last guy I talked with said that I should replace the whole Travertine floor.. and at a cost of around $30K I was like helllll no.

With unexpected company in that situation, just give them a brush and get it done quicker... :)

What's a Travertine tile? (Please go easy on me, I'm not native English...)

But yes, thanks for trying to make me feel somewhat inadequate by saying this is all a peice of cake when to me its a lot of work.

Where did i say you were inadequate ? It is not your fault your hosting company uses an mySQL server that is overloaded
I thought you have cpanel, beacuse this is not a dedicated server, and cpanel is an hosting industry standard for linux machines.
http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/4615/picture1hr8.jpg
Account backup, full account backup,mySQL database backup,mySQL database restore.
And yes, changing the hosting when you have cpanel is a 20 minute work.
The only thing you have to look out for is when you change hosting that your new user name is the same as the last,so that you dont need to change program variables when you restore you account
(home/user variable)

breitlingsource wrote:
I do not have cpanel, and I'm not aware of any "Full Account Backup" feature.

If you said it ever so polity we could have find a new solution.
But no.....

breitlingsource wrote:
Even if I could backup my full account I would still have to export and reimport every single mysql database I have.. that's 10. I do not have a clue how one could do it in 20 mins.. though I would really like to have that ability.

mysqldump --add-drop-table -u username -p database_name -p"password of the account" > /home/user/backup.bak.sql
takes around 15-20 seconds

to reimport,phpmyadmin or even better...
http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump.php
this is an automatic php gui script that does the job for you.

breitlingsource wrote:
Then after reimporting them.. assuming no issues, I would have to rename all the areas where the mysql database is called in all the websites.

Depends.... If your new account has the same paramaters (user name)
no change is needed. You only have to create a mysql user(s) withe the same passwords that connects to the database(s),and no changes in the files is needed.
Even if you would need to change it,you only need to change a line in the single file that is usually called config.php or configuration.php

breitlingsource wrote:
And like you said.. then there is DNS propagation.. which means that some people will see the forum down for 24 or so hours after the move takes place, while others will see the new forum immediately.

Yes and no.It can take up to 24 hours, and the propagation could be done in 2-3 hours.
Or you could send a mass e mail to members saying them to do this:
Start-run-cmd

C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

this flushes the DNS automaticly.

breitlingsource wrote:
And if I moved to another host and they have a shared database server... why wouldn't they have problems too?

Well, for starters you could move from the reseller disaster called
IX Web Hosting
http://www.vistainter.com/reviews/I/ixwebhosting.com/
There are normal hosting companies, but they charge more for their service.

breitlingsource wrote:
and I really don't trust given my passwords and stuff out to other people, but I thank you for the offer.

Did i ever asked for the passwords?
Of course i did not, passwords are sacred.
I was offering you technical support for free in my spare time so that the site on which my addiction is fed can run smoothly.
But alas,i get flamed instead

So thx guys for all your fun posts,it was fun reading you.....
I would ask the admin to delete my account, probably some other user will want this name and it would be a shame to waste it.

bye bye

Seeing as you are not coming back.. I wonder if there is a point in me responding?

I do find it a bit ironic, if not hypocritical, that you can be offended by my post, but I should not be offended by yours. I said it was a lot of work for me to switch host.. you said it was easy.. peice of cake.. 20 mins work. I took offense to that... maybe I shouldn't have.. but i did.

When I was reimporting the Database for just the forum.. it took me like an hour to figure it out and make it work properly. I'm not that quick with server stuff. Obviously you are, I know how to do it and I get by.. I just do it slowly. 20 minutes for you, probably about 6-8 hours for me including finding a host and testing them out.

I have to change the references to the database in my sites that do not only have references to it in a configuration file.. they didn't use an included file and its in like 8-10 files. I have to find those files and change them. These are sites that use custom code, not forums or wordpress or similar.

Anyway.. Thanks. I am sorry you were offended by my post.

Damnit now i'm pissed off. I hate getting into arguments on here. I created this place originally to be a place to have fun, where there was no drama and no unease.

I apologize to everyone (including navitimer, i'd love to have you back if you'd reconsider leaving) for being sensitive about moving my sites, and especially to navitimer. However, there is no way I could do it in 20 mins.. if I could, I would have done it a long time ago during one of the other dozen or so times that I've considering moving my hosting to someone more reliable.

Pity about misunderstanding cos' I believe that you didn't have intention to offend him and vice versa also. I know navitimer through this forum and he's a great guy who just wanted to help.

Not going to throw fuel anywhere near that (apologies if I did earlier - not my intention either), but I must say - I have noticed an improvement in the last couple of days - far fewer critical errors and a generally faster response.
