Not a watch this time, though.

My wife decided that she wanted to buy me a ring for my recent 40th birthday, and the original plan was to get a fairly traditional signet ring. However we couldn't find anything that we both liked and so we got in touch with a Toronto jeweller who does custom work and talked to him about some ideas that we had. Picked the finished ring up yesterday and I am amazed at the quality of the work. Here's a very quick and dirty cell phone pic, but you get some idea. The frame of the ring is the initial of my last name, the lion is from the family crest, the inscription at the bottom is the family motto and the sapphire eye is for my birth month.

It's unbelievable how much work went in to this!

Hey that's pretty cool...

I wish I had a family crest... :( :D I was thinking of getting a ring as well... not married but something simple that I can wear on a daily basis.

and a Happy belated Birthday Roff! and congrats on a wonderful gift from your wife.

Nice going Roff.

Generally speaking, signet rings aren't my thing, but something so personalised and unique is fantastic. Looks like some superb workmanship on that lion as well. Excellent job.

What's the main part of the ring made of? White gold or platinum?

Yeah, I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I took a loupe to it last night and he has even detailed the fur on the lion with tiny lines - truly amazing, and much cheaper than I expected for custom - no overhead I guess.

The frame of the ring is 14k white gold (14k is a better option for structure and colour than 18 or 9) and the lion is 18k yellow gold. The white gold is also natural - no rhodium platin that would be almost inevitable if you bought a commercial ring.

That's really cool, Roff. I certainly couldn't pull off wearing something like that, but I really admire all the thought that went into it. I must say, your family crest looks reminiscent of the crest of my college at the University of Cambridge (Emmanuel). Is there something I should know . . . ?

Nah, lots of similar heraldic crests from UK origins.

The lion isn't my full crest, but there are lots of variations depending on which arm of the family you are from. Given that I don't know which 'branch of the tree' I am specifically from, and given that I didn't want to over think it, I just took the common element.

Since arriving in the UK, I've noticed that the lion crest thing is indeed very prevalent. Even the formal University of Cambridge crest has it, which I think my college copied a little.

Beautiful ring, Congratulations. before reading about your family crest I was thinking that you had some relation with Peugeot the french automobile company. Here is their logo, also I have seen many of the British era Indian organisation to have similar lions on their logo.
