I really like the direction BMW is starting to take with the twin turbo engines. My little brother has a 335i with some minor modifications (performance & cosmetic) and it's an absolute weapon. The 1M is a fantastic little drivers car too, although I just cant get down with it's shape/size. |

So they arbitrarily give the bike 10 seconds... They must have had a pre run, saw that it was about 10 sec slower, and decided to do it that way. The video doesnt show anything other than that driving a bike flat out on a wet track is suicidal. On a dry track im pretty sure the bike would smoke the car. That M5 is pretty damn awesome though. |

As a biker who doesn't own a car I do think it's a bit cheeky to film on a day where the car naturally has a massive advantage, on a dry day where both vehicles could perform much closer to their best it'd be a much more interesting race to watch. I have to ride my GSXR every day, rain or shine, wether I'm going to dinner or heading out to go flying, but riding a bike on damp/greasy cold UK roads is starting to make me consider taking my driving test and getting a car. |

Good to watch as that new M5 is awesome! I had a 740i Sport a few years back which had a normally aspirated 4.4l V8 and that was rapid, so a newer version of that engine, PLUS a pair of turbos bolted on, will be FUN!  But that said I always find car vs bike races to be a bit pointless. If it's dry, the bike smokes the car on account of it's better power to rate ratio : in the wet the car smokes the bike due to four wheels and better grip through the corners. What do we learn? Not much. What do we already KNOW? If you want speed at the expense of literally everything else (including cost and potentially your life), buy a bike. But if you want to stay dry when it rains, warm when it's cold, be able to carry more than a packet of chewing gum, have a conversation with your passenger(s) at normal vocal levels, be less likely to die, and only really have to worry about suicidal bikers taking your wing mirrors off as they barge through lines of traffic, buy a car.  (Dons flameproof suit!  )

I actually really wanted to do my bike test a few years back, but it would've just been a weekend thing for me : I couldn't use it for commuting or anything like that. But then the ol' finances took a pounding for one reason or another, and the bike idea got burried along with a whole bunch of my watch targets.

Have been in a car when someone ran a stop sign and came straight out in front of me. Have been on a bike when the same thing happened. I recommend the car. |

Definitely has it's moments, but I'd not get a car if it meant giving up bikes. Even if I take my driving test next year I've agreed to borrow a car from relatives as and when I need one rather than go out and buy my own, so I'd still have to ride to pick it up anyway. That said both the S1000RR and the M5 are without doubt brilliant machines, If I was offered a choice of one out of the two for free for a year, I'd have to do some pretty hard thinking as to which I'd take (and as much as it stings to say it'd probably be the car. ).

My issue was long ago - a late 80s 7 series that ate a transmission at 52K, (warranty was to 50), for which i got a middle finger and a big bill from BMW. (the dealer tried to get them to cover it, they said no, despite the fact it was dealer serviced, all records from new) Paid the bill, drove to the Infinti dealer, traded it in, haven't owned one since. And how many cars have I bought since then? Shortsighted approach. |
