Reports are actually saying that it crashed in front of a grandstand rather than into the crowd directly. Sounds like injuries from debris. |

Yes, a VERY sad day for Reno Air Races. A heartfelt sorrow to family/friends close to victims. And a vivid reminder of the risks associated with "slipping the surly bonds of earth...and touching the face of God". |

To correct the miss information above, the plane DID crash into the crowd; it crashed in a box-seated area which was in front of the grandstand, courtesy of CNN. Tragic tragic situation. |

The plane crashed 100 yards from the Breitling chalet according to George from Govberg who is there. He said a lot of injuries and fatalities and a very scary situation. |

Just woke up to the news after a fabulous day at the Breitling Sion Air Show. It really is a shocker. Really sad. My thoughts go to the families of the victims. ROE are really very strict in Europe since the Ramstein disaster. The participating planes are definetely not allowed to fly over the crowd anymore, actually, they're performing their show to the left of the runway, while the public has been moved a further 50 to 100m to the right of the runway than it used to be. It sure is less spectacular but much safer. I believe that those ROE are less strict in the US where planes are allowed to fly over the public, especially at Air Shows like the Reno Air Races or Oshkosh, where no fighter jets of the 3rd or 4th generation are participating. Jimmy Leeward, the pilot of the doomed Mustang, was one of the most skilled and most trusted pilots around. Proof that when fatality strucks, even the best are powerless. Jimmy had exhibited his exceptional flying skills flying a vast variety of aircraft from the Ford Tri-Motor to his well known Mig-17. He had flown over 250 different aircraft in more than 120 races. Jimmy's family scheduled a Saturday memorial which was not planned as open to the public. |
