I have a 5 year old autistic son. He is starting his third year in public school (he was diagnosed when he was 3 and spent 2 fine years in our public school system). This year we are told (because of the bus schedule) he will be picked up by the bus at 0515 and dropped off at 1630 ie 4:30 PM. When asked why so early and so late, we were told that his stop (our house) was the first stop in the morning and the last stop in the afternoon. So my question is this, does this make any sense to ANYONE reading, or that can READ.

Not sure if your question meant something else, but that schedule is CRAZY!! Write to your school board, congressman, newspaper, etc! :guns:

5:15 in the morning is insane. He's going to be learning less at school because he is going to be so tired.

WOW 5:15am? How far away from the school is this "first stop"?

I was the first/last stop on my bus route in very rural Virginia, at the county line.
We got on the bus at 645am, and home about 4:10 or so if I remember correctly, but 5:15 is crazy.

Send him with a travel pillow, so he can sleep that extra hour on the bus. :)

Holy cow, this is insane. You need to go to the school district superintendent immediately.

When were they picking him up previusly? Why is that route no longer acceptable? Seems as if they've changed the route because the way it was before is not convenient for someone. I would raise hell if I were you. You need to know why the decision was made to change times and it needs to be made very clear that it is unacceptable for your young child, autistic or not, to have a 5:15 am pick up.

I hope things work out for you.

R,
I wonder what the subtext is to this. I concur, though. This is unacceptable for a youngster to have such a schedule. Do you know what the current numbers are for your district of students who are identified as autistic? Does your son have an active IEP? You should be able to have access to some of this data, as well as to the person who is your son's liason, a professional who is in charge of special needs students. This would be a good start. I would NOT let this alone. Also, you NEED to address the board at their next meeting regarding this, as I assume you have already made the apprpriate phone calls.
Best of luck to you and your little guy.

Agreed, that is absurd. Unless your home is several hours drive away from the school, that is completely unacceptable. I'd agree with some other commenters' suggestions that you contact your local school board and request that this situation be remedied.
