Reported in the press that the Norwegian killer sold his Breitling and a Montblanc pen to fund his mass killings. Quote "March 1: He raises 2,000 euros by selling his Breitling watch and Montblanc fountain pen." Hope that he was not a site member and that no one purchased a ling from Norway around that time. Such a sad waste of life, condolences to any true Norwegians on the site, it must be such a shock for you all. Ian |

I saw some very moving interviews with survivors on TV this weekend. A truly terrible situation and I hope none of our members here are personally caught up in this tragedy. My thoughts are with those affected. |

What is beyond belief is his maximum sentence of 21 years from what I read on the BBC! |

I've never been the Norway (its a ways from Down Under) but i understand it's a reallyfantastic, peaceful, progressive society; the last place you would expect something like this. There seems to be something very dark, deep within the human heart. |

Unlike in many other countries that is reassessed before release and can be extended if someone is considered to be a public risk. |

OK, a short lesson in the Norwegian penal code... First, keep in mind; I am not a lawyer. However, I have a broad knowledge and understanding of Norwegian law, in part due to my own interest in the field, and in part due to the fact that my father is a lawyer, and we have discussed legal matters together for some time. Second, a very important term: Forvaring - lit. "custody", it has a specific meaning in the Norwegian penal code, as explained below The maximum penalty under Norwegian law is called "livstid" (lit. lifetime), and is a penalty for up to 21 years. After two thirds of the sentence has been served, the prisoner may petition for parole. Now, when asking for a sentence, the prosecutor can choose whether or not to ask for "forvaring" at the same time. When that is asked for, and included as part of the sentence, the prisoner may spend the rest of his natural life in prison. The reason is that the original sentence may be extended an unlimited number of times, as long as there is a risk of a repeat offence, or if the offender is considered a menace to society. The fact of the matter is that, in this case, the prosecutor will most certainly ask for both the maximum sentence, and "forvaring". The sentencing will most likely affirm this. If the prison system decides to be really nasty, they'll just stick him in with the general population, where he will most likely not last beyond three years before having some sort of "accident". |

This is a tragedy and it makes me feel sick to my stomach to see this type of behavior. My thoughts go out to the victims and their families. |

I would certainly hope that his term be extended so he never experiences freedom again. |
