With Atlantis touching down in the early hours of Thursday, July 21, 2011, the fabulous era of the space Shuttle came to end.
I say, job well done America. Let's hope that we won't have to wait too long before the next manned flight from Cape Canaveral.

A few years ago my wife and I went to Florida and took a trip to Kennedy Space Center for a shuttle launch, it's something I had always wanted to see and what a site it was. The power and speed were incredible. The shuttle is a true engineering marvel.

Sadly, I never got to see an actual launch. Closest I got was when I was at Cape Kennedy in October 1981, a couple of weeks before the launch of the second flight of Columbia in November.

Fantastic technological achievement but I guess in today's economic climate, the budget's no longer available.

Glad I was around to witness the exploration of space from the days of Yuri Gagarin/John Glen onwards.

I heard(or I think) upon decommission the shuttle is coming to California... Los Angeles to be exact!

Yup, one is going to California Science Center in LA, one will be at Kennedy Space Center, one will go to the Smithsonian, and the test shuttle will be going to the Intrepid in New York City. I'm looking forward to seeing them as well.

It's a real end of an era. I never got to see a launch, but am looking forward to seeing the shuttles when they make it to public display. I wonder if we'll ever see it's like again?

Went to see STS-134 in April when it got scrubbed twice but the ensuing delay for STS-135 meant I got to see that launch. A pity about the clouds but an amazing spectacle nonetheless. I won't forget it in a long, long time.

Unfortunately, we won't. The tragedy in front of us is not so much that the shuttle retired but, looking forward, that it will be replaced with nothing at all.

Politics apart (I will refrain on any comment on the fact that it is a Democratic administration that killed the program before even a replacement is ready), astronauts rely exclusively on the Russians to fly to the ISS. And what's worse is that the "new" proposed vehicles owe more to the basic design and operation to the Apollo era, since NASA will be working on heavy-lift rockets comparable to Saturn V, than to the shuttle era.

Many have questioned if the shuttle program was worth the cost but I wonder how you can place a dollar figure on something that is priceless.

That's inaccurate, George W laid out plans to retire the shuttle program in 2004. The current administration abandoned plans for a new government funded spacecraft and instead are relying on the private sector to build the next space vehicles.

That's correct. But there is a difference from "laying out plans" and "terminating" the program before a replacement is even in sight.
