I just saw a magazine spread about this car:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E43Ookif ... re=related

Have to say that looks amazing! I love the aggressive and yet refined design! And the cabin looks fantastic as well! I am thinking of trading in my 2 year old LS460L, which I do love, for the V8 version!

I saw this a few months ago and love the way it looks -- like a 4 door CL. Ive been considering trading the SL for one (there's a super nice new SL coming out too!).

I loved the look of the old CLS, and the new one looks great too.

I'm in the market for a new car at the moment, but sadly this one is way beyond me. Over here the range starts at about USD 170k, not including on-road costs.

That's for a 350 diesel. V8 models are way over 200k.

And Driver8 thinks Britain is a rip-off...

It's all about premium. It has a star on it, ain't it?

If you like stars, you must pay for them.

My point is that it is well beyond my reach in Australia, but that might not be the case if I lived elsewhere. In relative terms, it is ludicrously expensive here.

I'm not anti-Merc, but I will offer this opinion: over here the CLS is about 4-6 times more expensive than the SS V8 Holden I sold last week, but nowhere near 4-6 times as good.

My point was that since it has a star on the hood it is priced accordingly (and not only in Australia), IMHO very overpriced for what you get.

As you very correctly pointed out, it's nowhere near 6 times as good the SS and I totally agree with that. IMO the Holden is much more fun to drive and much more solid but of course the valet won't look at you the same way if you arrive in a Merc.

I'd rather have the RELIABLE Lexus Ls460. I am a Lexus Nut ,and nothing tops the fit and finish ,and reliability of a Lexus.

I'm not a huge fan of the front, the grill seems too pronounced but the rest of the car is a real headturner, much like the current CLS. I did look at CLSs but plumped for an S in the end primarily for the extra space and the more powerful engine, no twin turbo V12s in the CLS range :D

Owned any recent Benzs? Reliability has seriously sharpened up on MBs since the darker days of 1999-2003 or so.

Yep, not to talk about resale value of a Lexus, any Lexus.

Here in Europe people are not big fans of new Lexuses, so second-hand are worth close to nothing.

Also, it may be interesting in the States to buy a Lexus with all the packages they're offered with but Toyota take their money back with the cost of services.

Lexus may have a crap resale value over in Europe, but in the states it has the highest resale value of any car , european cars have one of the worst resale values in the states. Take a look on autotrader ,and see how poor of a resale value a 745i or s500 have from say 5 or 6 years ago.

Yep, Lexus was originally made for the US market anyway. It was only much later that it was "exported" in Europe.

But based on autotrader:

2006 Lexus LS 430 $ 30,575

2006 BMW 7 series $ 37,675

2006 MB S-class $ 28'025

I have a Lexus and a Benz (06 with 25k miles), and the Benz has had way more problems than the Lexus. But its also a much sexier car. I showed some of the warranty invoices to a friend of mine who works on Mercedes and he said that if I had to pay, a couple of the repairs would have been at least a couple grand. The Lexus (now at 68k) has only had a rear strut go bad, which cost about $350 to replace.
