My brother got me a high end Mercur shaving set last month, which included a badger brush, DE Razor, and a bowl as well as some English shaving soap. Mind you up until then I used my finger to smudge supermarket grade foam over my face and then do the ol' hack and slash. Never again! The wetshave is so much more of an enjoyable experience once you get your technique right I am amazed why it isn't more popular! Its even cheaper and safer if you know what you are doing. Mind you it took me a couple of days to recover after my first wet shave untill I saw this set of you tube videos on the subject:

My shave has evolved so significantly that my wife cant stop thanking my brother (who is a notorious cheapass, I got him a Rolex on his birthday :lol: )

I wetshave too. Been doing it for years. I've only owned one electric razor and that was when I first started shaving, but I quickly changed to wet shaving and been doing it ever since. I'm still just a Mach 3 man, as I've never ventured into the more traditional double edge realm, but it sounds like may be I should!

That said, I love to be good enough to use a good old fashioned cut-throat razor, but I'm not sure my face could withstand the learning process! :wink:

Maybe I'm mistaken but I think that you can find electric razors on the market that can be used under water. I know that Braun has some that can, at least, be cleaned under running water.

I was talking to a Braun salesman about it and he told me than once your skin is used to electric razor shaving, it is difficult to go back. It would sure need some adaptation period and your skin may never support the change. Even though there is certainly some salesman talk involved, he may not be entirely wrong.

I read up a bit on the subject, unless you have a goatee or some other sort of facial hair that requires razor sharp control, a single blade razor serves no additional purpouse than looking cool and being very dangerous. The safety razor, ie double edge razor, is the way to go! But only if you spring for a good one, like a Merkur, and drop some coin on a bowl and badger brush. All in all the cost would be around 150 USD initially, but the joy of getting a good shave and long term savings are substantial! I used Mach 3s ever since they came out. Never again!

Interesting, might be worth a try for me.

I normally use an electric razor but I've never been happy with the results (even the good ones). I keep using it because disposable blades irritate the skin on my neck too much - I can use them every now and then, but not every day or even every week.

My barber shaves himself every day with a cut-throat, he swears by it.

I have wetshaved ever since I started grow beard, currently I am using a Gillette Fusion but I am considering getting myself a straight razor. It would be nice to learn the technique and not to mention the factor of coolness ;)

Gents have a set with Straight Razor, Best Badger Brush, soap and a razor strop. All in all 1500 Swedish Kronor (233$ approx), not too bad price imho :)

I have wetshaved for years now, never into those electric shavers. If I'm in a hurry (like usually), I use gillette sensor excel with basic shaving foam but when time is no problem, it's a safety razor time. I have now two of those safety razors: Merkur futur or Mühle R106 + Mühle shaving brush + shaving soap. It's different experience, that shaving, but not in a bad way. There are pros and cons in both types of shaving: gillette is easy but others make better result, in my opinion. Biggest problem is with Merkur when shaving under nose, it's a big razor. I do also have a straight razor but I cannot get that sharp enough and there's also little fear of cutting more than I should in my neck.

I've always wet-shaved but only ever with a Gillette type product (currently the Gillette Mach 3 turbo).

Once a long time ago I used a brush and saving soap but since then it's been foam or gel. I'm intrigued as I have always wanted to 'upgrade', not necessarily to a straight razor but just something. This could be it. Nice thread Altair!

Please pardon my ignorance. How is a wet shave different from using supermarket grade foam to shave using a manual razor?

I wonder how many people here weshave?

Panasonic makes a great wet-dry shaver. Get the one that has the 13,000 rpm or vpm motor, not the cheapie. It got me off of the blades, and really irritated skin. For me, the only non-blade shave that will do.
