My mothers heirloom wedding ring she insists I take zero risk of losing is in Missouri. I need to get it either to NJ or Canada. She insists the couriers etc will steal it if it's insured as they think there is no loss to to the person as they will get paid out, and if it's not insured steal it because they can.

Try as I might, I can't convince her it's ok to UPS it.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a less known courier that is capable or providing increased security etc so that I might convince her it is safe to move it. It's in a not so safe place now :)

Thanks everyone!

I have used Brinks a few times for transporting items over $30-40,000 mark. They are, in my opinion, one of the most secure ways to go, but they can charge a pretty penny.
Other than that... Registered USPS mail.

Thanks very much jadanf,

Brinks may be cheaper than my alternative, which is having a friend fly and pick it up by hand, then fly and meet him later :)

Brinks will only deal with business no residential, for the record it was $500 to go from MO to BC.

Might have to fly there as you said Dr. Phil.

The Hope diamond was shipped USPS...

As I understand it, stealing from USPS is a Federal crime, so not many crooks will risk it. You should check with the Post Office though, if you can buy insurance up to the full value of the ring.

Or, sometimes for family heirloom of irreplacable emotional value, bite the bullet, fly in person n get it...

well no one will take care of something you care about better than you. in most cases i would just say ship and insure, BUT since this is your mothers and is a family heirloom, i agree with Dr Phil ( i never thought i would ever say that, cuz Dr phil sounds like the guy from TV).

Yeah I could fly and get there, but due to unfortunate circumstances I am getting a hard time from the person with it not wanting to give it to me, but will give it to someone else. Drama. :guns:

Anyone here in Kansas City? :(

If a USPS item is insured and registered over a certain value (I forget the exact number), the package becomes "High Value Mail" - at which point the item in question is escorted the whole way by the postal police. Most diamonds shipped in the US go via the mail

IMO .. Far and away the USPS Registered Mail service is the most affordable and safest way to ship this ring. The parcel is signed for when sent and received at each transfer while in shipment ... The insurance coverage offered by the USPS is very affordable and the service time is surprisingly efficient. In my business, I ship several hundred packages yearly containing not only highly valued items but in some instances, truely unique pieces that other shippers will not take the responsibility for .. And, in the past 20 years I have never had a claim filed for complete loss ... It's not to say that there haven't been some broken some items, on rare occasions ... But, in those few instances, I'll have to accept the responsibility for expedited shipping with "less than the best" packaging.
This is only free advice ... and it can be dismissed after reading.
