Had a very bad week last week, so to pick myself up (and to take advantage of a tax break) I'm thinking of taking a short trip some time in the next month or two.

Anyone got any recommendations for where to stay in LA?

Got a budget? Also depends on whether or not you want the tourist-y stuff or not. Beach? sightseeing? Relaxing? All of the above?

No particular budget in mind, just looking for an area where it's good to stay and there's plenty to see. Beach probably isn't so much of a priority.

EDIT - one thing I really want to do, being a boxing fan, is go and do some training at the Wild Card gym in Hollywood.

I can recommend the West Hollywood Hilton. I stayed there a couple of years ago and thought it was fantastic. New and modern complete with a rooftop pool bar with great views of the city. It's central to Hollywood and surrounds and only a short walk from restaurants and bars.

Not sure about the gym but if it's in Hollywood then you should be fine.

The Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Blvd is nice, and its right in the middle of everything. Its across the street from the Chinese Theater and the Kodak Theater. Wild card gym is nearby as well. Also in the area are the Renaissance Hotel on Highland, and the W Hotel on Hollywood Blvd (The W is brand new).

If money is no object, youve got the Beverly Hilton, the Beverly Hills Hotel, and the Peninsula. Also on the $$$$ list is the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena. Expensive, but a crazy beautiful setting.

The Andaz on Sunset Blvd is in a good location as well, and if you want something smaller and more hip, there is The Standard on Sunset Blvd. right near the Andaz.

Downtown also just opened a new JW Marriot and Ritz Carlton, both right next to the Staples Center, Nokia Theater, and grammy museum.

If you want to be by the beach, there are a lot of hotels on Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica.

Everything I mentioned is in the LA area, and pretty close to everything else.

EDIT: I forgot the the Hilton (or whatever it was before) is now the Andaz.

Just remembered there is also the Hilton next to Universal Studios (a few miles from Hollywood) and the rates there are probably more reasonable than some of the others that I mentioned.
