My little bit of paradise finally got high speed internet last week and my high speed modem turned up today. As I type this I am now not only not on dial up I'm on my own wireless network with a blazingly fast 3 Mbps connection - hey it beats 56k :woohoo:

Well you've moved from the stone age to the iron age, Roff! ;-) Congratulations are in order.

Where is Canada do you live again?! I thought it was a first world nation?

In all seriousness - have you ever looked into satellite internet? I've heard it's a great way to get high-speed internet in rural parts of the US.

I'm not that far from Tornto - only a couple of hours north, but we are in a rural farming community - I have cable a couple of kilometres east of me, and the same just to the west, but nothing in between because they are all farm properties so only four homes or less per mile of road frontage.

There is satellite coverage here - it's Ka band which is the old ex military band. However it's about $120 per month for 512k and close to $2,000 for the hardware.

I did look at the wireless stick modems but we only have basic cell coverage here so it would be slow.

This new system is based on Wimax which is much better than regular wifi, I'm sure it will be frustrating in time, but for now it's so much better than dial up I don't mind the fact that it's still relatively slow by modern standards.

OMG...56k ....<shudder....breaking into cold sweat>. that was c1998-99. i can't even imagine or fathom what's that like anymore! i could be wrong on this but even the starving children in somalia is getting dsl wifi

imo there's no better feeling in the world than that first time you went from dial-up to full-blown high speed internet!

Congrats Roff, just think what your post count can become now!

Slightly OT, but somehow it seems appropriate to mention it here, I've just been reminded that today (6 July 2010) is the day Marty McFly arrived in the future after hitting 88mph in the Delorean. 8)

That's great news! I can't begin to imagine how long it took for the photos to download.

Enjoy yourself!

That wasn't the worst - it was uploading the photos to photobucket. Oh and the 500 Megs of Microsoft updates that my wife's Windows 7 laptop needed in April :guns:

Well I'm sure if there was a large military presence here then we would have gotten it sooner too.

That ended up being an internet hoax. The pic supposedly showing the date was digitally altered. The date never appears in the movie, and they never mention the exact date.

D'oh!! And I pride myself on not being taken in by these things, it just seemed so plausible.

Anyhow, apologies for the hijack. Enjoy the 21st century Roff, nothing like being able to upload pics without having to wait 10 minutes for each one!
