Hi guyz, I know there are a few military men on the forum but don't think anyone fought in this war. Anyway I've started to get a fascination about this war and before going on holiday i purchased 3 or 4 books on the Vietnam War. Having read them all in the first week my thirst has still not been quenched I knew this war was brutal but some of the story's are just unbelievable. The books I read were autobiographies so they gave a great insight into everday life of a soldier in Nam. Question is does anyone know of any good books or film/documentaries I could purchase to find out more about the war. Any help would be much appreciated and if there are anyone here who knows anyone who served in Nam then I am in awe of them and the difficulties they faced and that probably goes for anyone who has fought/fighting in similar conditions or at all. I agree. It would be helpful to know which books you have read already. Once you get into the 80's and 90's and the "wars" waged in those periods, gimme a buzz. I can give you some great titles and first hand accounts. |

I'm currently reading Robin Olds' biography. Great read! Legendary pilot who was an ace in WWII and Vietnam (although not according to official records!). Okay the three I've read so far are: Marine Sniper by Charles Henderson, True story of Carlos Hathcock marine sniper. My favourite read so far, totally enthrolling with lots of details of missions etc which he took part in. Dear Mom A sniper's Vietnam by Joseph T Ward. A really enjoyable book of memoirs from the author who was also a sniper in the war. SOG by John L Plaster. A bit more difficult to get into but interesting all the same. All about intelligence and secrets of the Vietnam War. There you go, good books which seem to be quite believable and true, any more good reads would be well appreciated. |

Alright, Andrew, here are two: Rogue Warrior by Richard Marcinko. Despite Dick's over the top personality, he's a SEAL that lived it all and came out the other end rather beat up, both by the U.S. Government and the U.S. Navy as well as the 'enemy'. All true except for a huge chunk of the names for obvious reasons. Starts off in Vietnam (mostly, except for the small part about his pre-service youth...), and ends up in the eighties. (His further books were required to be fictionalized due to..well, I'll let you get into his stuff, as he explains it oh so daintily...) Seal of Honor: Operation Red Wings and the Life of LT. Michael P. Murphy, USN I am not qualified to carry the LT.'s athletic supporter. It breaks the heart.... LT. Murphy was awarded the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions, the highest medal awarded to U.S. Troops. A tight read and all true as well as being recent. Enjoy and let me know when you finish these two. |

I am very keen on military history and the Vietnam War in particular. I have this book and it is a very good read. Unheralded Victory; Who Won The Vietnam War. Mark Woodruff. If you look it up on Amazon they give reviews of it. It sets out to destroy lots of the myths about the Vietman War. |

My personal favorite - We Were Soldiers Once...and Young, by Harold Moore and Joseph Galloway. While I enjoyed the movie "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson, the book is FAR superior. In 1993, it was the recommended reading for Marines by Gen. Carl Mundy, then Commandant of the US Marine Corp (who I had the honor and pleasure of working with after his retirement from the Corp). Someone just gave me a copy of The Killing Zone by Frederick Downs, Jr. I've heard really great reviews, but haven't had a chance to dive in yet. And don't forget to watch Full Metal Jacket.  Love that movie.

Love that movie.I've just bought the blueray today, although I have seen the film the books I read on holiday told of some of the fighting in that area so I thought 'I'll have to watch that again'. Reading those 3 or 4 books and learning what went on and all the didderent places like Danang, Hill 55 etc makes me want to go and watch a lot of these films again.
