"So-and-so has developed software that can scrub all the data on a harddrive." It's called a magnet.

Taking a magnet to a hard drive, a powerful one, will usually render the drive useless as it wipes out the firmware and most of the data, but its not entirely reliable. A good way to permanently destroy a hard drive is drilling four holes through the platters. The US government uses hand crank operated hard drive destroyers, that must work in 15 seconds or less, and make disaster recovery impossible. If you want to destroy data on a drive and keep it functional, use a program called DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke). Unfortunately, most fax machines, copiers, and work group level printers all keep a log of documents. Companies should have a data destruction policy and when it comes to certain information (medical records) its the law. Its a shame when information like this falls into the wrong hands due to lack of policy.
