Post subject:  Gliding
I have just joined the gliding club at my university which I am very excited about. It is heavily subsidized by the uni so very cheap to do.
I am doing it as a way to learn about flyiny as in the future I hope to become a pilot.
( Also a good way to see if I like flying at all!!)

I was just wondering if there are anyother gliders out there? And if so, whats it like?

Did a few flights many years ago from West Malling in Kent (England).

It takes a bit of getting used to - I enjoyed it but I was having quite a few flights in Chipmunks with the air cadets at the time and preferred the engine.

I'm doing it backwards. After learning to fly with the RAF at University I'm going to try gliding. My boss got me a few hours glide time as a Xmas present and I'm going to wait for it to warm up a bit before doing so.

Am going to wear my Navitimer so I can calculate descent rates with the slide rule just like in Chronolog :roll:

I started flying with gliders some in 1995.
After my PPL in 2000 I soon gave up gliding.

For flying one hour in a Cessna or Katana, I need a few minutes for flightplaning, maybe 15 minutes for refueling and preparations like inspection and paperworks.

For flying one hour with a glider, I needed a complete sunday. Had to be at the airfield by 10 in the morning (about 45 minute drive), moving out all gliders from the hangar, and storing all of them after the last one has landed in the late afternoon. And we allways hat one specialist, who did not want to land...he just flew by farting!

Did a 5 day gliding course around 1980s at Dunkeswell in Devon. Enjoyable, cheap but a lot of standing around for very little time in the air - from memory, about 60 minutes all week. Best bit was driving the battered old Jag used to tow the gliders airborne!
