Not so sure the niche Apple is aiming to sell this to exists... I've never been a fan of tablets as a whole.


That being said, the boys in Cupertino have a way of making magic happen. Maybe they'll carve a new path (as they've been doing for the last 10 or so years)

I've just had a look at it via the earlier link, as I was interested to see what it's all about and I tend to be an 'early adopter'.

Erm isn't it just a big version of an iPod Touch? With books on it?

I admit the ipad is more evolutionary than revolutionary but the Ipad can do everything a touch can do BIGGER and thats just right out of the box. I'm looking forward to:
*Apps designed specificly for the Ipad
*Games will be bigger, longer, better. period.
*No skwinting or zooming when brousing safari
*typing will be easier (hopefully)
*You can walk around your house like Jody LaForge and pretend your an engeneer in a Star Ship

I guess Steven Colbert and I are the only ones excited about this

Haters all of you!

I used to be an Apple hater as well. I still think their laptops and Imacs are priced way high and would never buy one. But they do make a hell of a digital audio player. The Ipod touch was one hell of a PDA and a fun toy. Over-priced? I don't think so IMO. Considering the Kindle DX is $489 and a Ipad starts at $499 I'd say it's priced lower than expected. Over-hyped? You bet! But who on earth needs all this stuff anyway! I would survive without my Ipod or PC. Under-speced? Sure, why not. It could always be upgraded. I'll give you that one. One more thing to pack around? I don't think I would bring this on a hike. But it would be smaller than any laptop or netbook for that matter. Oh well to each his own. I guess I was expecting to hear a more positive response.

I don't hate Apple. I'm making the switch from a 4 year old Dell laptop on XP to an iMac precisely because I'm so impressed with how Apple does things.

Only problem with this iPad (aside from the name that conjures up images of sanitary napkins) is I just don't know how I would use it! I have a use for desktop computing/communication (desktop/laptop) , I have a use for mobile computing/communication (smartphone) but in between I see NO need.

Imo the iPad is positioned squarely to battle the extremely popular "netbook" category. That's where the primary function is to browse internet, forum communication, shopping on Amazon, read RSS/News/blogs, youtubing, facebooking, twittering, and of course, good ol email.

For those reasons -- most of which I'm already currently doing with my iPhone wherever I am in the house (& most often while lying down on the bed, where a typical netbook is awkward), I will certainly buy 1 or 2 (for the wife)!

+1 for that camp too. I certainly don't hate Apple. I love the iPod Touch that I have and my iPhone is a thing of wonder. I like gadgety things and new stuff. I just don't see where it would fit into my life. I'm sure this cliche has been used a lot lately but I see it as a solution to a problem that I don't (yet) have.

Oh, and I'm saving for my wedding too and the Mrs would have my knackers for earrings if I just went and got one.

At the moment I don't really know enough about it to make a particularly informed judgement, but I'm with Sav on this in as much as it seems to be a solution to a problem that no-one really has. Too big to be truly portable, and yet not "lap-top enough" to do everything you want a computer to do. Still, having said that, I'm pretty sure Apple could make a super-slimline, gloss white/black device for removing fluff from under your big toenail, and you can be sure that within a couple of months everyone on Earth would claim that it's indispensible.

And the sad thing is, I'm probably one of them! An iPod takes care of my music needs, and a iPhone takes care of my calling needs (and plenty of other totally pointless, but very cool, things as well!). Give me a few months and I'll undoubtedly be typing my BreitlingSource posts from a shiny iPad.

I'm already taking photo w my iPhone, tweak it w Photogene App for the iPhone, upload using Photobucket App for the iPhone, and paste the IMG links to my BreitlingSource posts all on my iPhone...

It's far from practical or what people want (needs GPS, webcam, 4g, etc).

But for $500, it's a steal for a gimmick.
