i just wanted to post up, there will be pics but i need to size them and i wanted to post up sooner rather than later.

last month i went on hols to the US, as some of you know ive had a pretty bad year in that my mum passed away just 25 months after we lost my dad so its been a bit up and down.

so my annual 2 week break arrived and i spent 2 weeks away of which 4 days were wine tasting in Napa, only the second time ive been to Napa/Sonoma so i dropped Tunnel Ling a quick PM as i read he was in the business in Napa just asking what he recommended and which Vineyards were worth a look in.

got a kind reply which also said to let him know when i was out there as he was around, fantastic, so i did and then i found out what he does for a living.

Hope you dont mind me posting it??? but hence the name he builds underground caves for the vineyards!!! lots of you may have seen them when touring and tasting for those that havent these arent the kinda thing youd imagine they are huge, buried careful and skillfully underground in the side of hills, under properties, under vines etc

its all very James Bond, big wooden doors open to a maze of concrete floored tunnels keeping the wine in the perfect conditions in the barrles, some wine caves have a ballroom or a dining facility to have secret parties (see very bond)

well anyway i really like them (i want one in the back garden) so i gave TL a text and he very kindly offered to show us round one of his caves, and i was just amazed, not only at all the work that goes into the projects but that someone ive never met and live a fair distance away from was kind enough to give up a part of his working day to come and show us round the caves (ps shameless plug he is in a book)

i will post pics for those interested but i just wanted to publically thank TL for his time he is a really stand up guy, i enjoyed meeting him talking caves, wine and watches, was a great part of the trip.

just shows how good this forum is!

It's about time we a had "feel good" story about this forum!

Alex - glad you had a good trip. My wife and I were in Napa/Sonoma October 10-13. Perhaps you saw me in a tasting room?? I was the slightly tipsy, more than slightly overweight guy wearing a Navi World.

I knew that Tunnel Ling was involved in tunneling and lived in Napa - I just never knew that his work centered around doing it for the wineries.

Tunnel Ling - any chance that you built this one at Alexander Valley Vineyard?

:lingsrock:

Alex, it was a pleasure meeting you, I'm glad you're holiday went so well. Nothing like a cave tour with a nice glass of Dutch Henry Argos. I wish I could have had a bit more time and shown you a few others....some other time? Or maybe we'll just put one in your back yard! We all have a common interest and it's nice to meet someone who doesn't think you're crazy :P And now I know for sure that I would like to add an emergency to the collection.

As you can imagine I have quite a few pictures...just need to upload them on the server so that I can post them here.

kstone- I didn't build those but I have worked up that way.

Great story, and great to see the forum fostering 'real world' relationships.

If anyone wants to stop by Perkinsfield I've got plenty of wood that needs cutting and splitting and the snow will soon need clearing
