i am looking to learn how to fly, does anybody have any advice or information on how long it takes, good place to go (around NYC). annd just any advice at all (cost to learn?,planes?)

I assume that you would be training to get your ppl (private pilot liscence), which would take about one year under normal circumstances. The requirement for a part 141 school is 35 total hours, and for a part 61 school the requirement is 40 hours. Depending on your flight school and aircraft you train in, plan on spending $4500-$6000.

Your most memorable flight will be your first solo, which will be when your instructor signs your class 3 or better medical and you get your student pilot liscence. This happens around 6-10 hours, and again depending on your flight instructor and training aircraft.

The two main training aircraft brands are Piper and Cessna. Cessna is the "standard" training aircraft and almost every flight school will have at least one (my flight school has 5). I have flown Cessnas and the frame is very good and the instrument layout is easy to navigate. I have never flown a piper, but I plan to very soon.

It would take about a year to get your ppl going once a week and missing a few weeks here and there. Since I am still in school, next summer I will do a lesson about twice a week so I can get my liscence over the summer.

Learning how to fly is easy. Learning how to land is the hard part!! Just remember one thing, a good landing is when the aircraft can be used again!!

Good luck in your training. I cannt speak for how long a PPL takes because I have never gone that route. I do know that as a full time job it took me about 18 months to get qualified with about 300 hours or so.

BTW, I did not get my first "B" until after I stopped flying the first time. Pitty.

How long it takes is not the most important thing, nor is how much it costs. Learning to be a safe pilot who makes good decisions is what is really important. Anyone with good motor skills and hand to eye coordination can learn the mechanical skills of flying rather quickly. However, learning how to stay out of trouble takes longer.

Don't be in a hurry to get to your checkride. Study hard in ground school and ask a lot of questions of your flight instructor. Listen to the answers and ask more if you don't understand. When you are alone up there and behind the airplane it is too late. Then you are in survival mode.

My point is your flight instructor should be teaching you how to be safe and make good decisions as well as how to manage the controls and avionics. If you are not getting this, find another instructor.

There is a lot to learn about many different things. It is not like cramming for an exam. You will need everything you are being taught at one time or another. Take your time and make it a fun experience.

My experience is it takes twice as long and costs twice as much as you planned to get your PPL!

Out of curiosity, what's the hourly rate with an instructor in the States nowadays?

I keep promising myself I'll have an hour or two when I'm over in Arizona again.

Figure about $150 or so for a steam gauge trainer. More for a glass panel or complex aircraft.

Speaking as a ppl and a cpl flying instructor, it is generally said that it would take a year or so to get your ppl. However there are many schools out there who run 'intense' course over around 4-6 weeks, where you will fly every day and have the same licence at the end. I'm not familiar with NYC but i'm sure both options would be open to you. The cost is roughly the same. The flying isn't always what challenges people, with enough time(and money) almost anyone can be taught to the standard required for a ppl, its the ground school exams you have to pass that catches people out.

A good landing is when you can walk from the plane by yourself, a perfect landing is when you can use the plane again ;)
