That is a very sobering point Altair, very sobering and thought provoking! One mans mess is anothers luxury!

I had a similar experience many years ago when I took my Mothers remains back to India so I could scatter them on my Grandparents graves in Bangalore. I had nursed her for 8 years with a terminal illness, had a breakdown the year she died and I had a major a car accident also, you could say I was feeling mighty sorry for my lot in life.

Then I went to India.. Boy, if ever there is a country to give a wake up call to some feeling sorry for himself Brit that was the country!

I will take with me to my dying day the image of Rubbish being dumped in a certain area of the city so that the street people could go through it to salvage what they needed to survive, one man had no legs, just a piece of leather wrapped around his stumps and two leather pads on his hands, he went through that garbage pile every day looking for food and things he might be able to sell. Some people do not have the good fortune or opportunity to even pull themselves out of the gutter so I count myself lucky everyday to have been born where I was and to be able to have the luxury of choice!

i hate taxes, and the way the medical system and tuition in this country are.

They are focal points of my emigrational thoughts. People are going to say for a 23 year old like me, who cares?

I do. Its a travesty that taxes continue to climb and incomes are never adjusted for it, and wages aren't boosted either.

Not to mention our recession.

Another thing, why can't we have some sort of socialised health care system in the U.S? Its pathetic that medical sector has become a business as have HMOS and etc. What is the average guy with 2 kids supposed to do when he can't afford a copay or surgery?

Tuition, after going through college, there is so much ambiguity in the workfield, and still have not been able to find the best of work....yet the Government is always ready to collect the loan money...

and as always i apologise if i hurt anyone's feelings...

but these aformentioned issues are key focal points in my consideration to emigrate to Europe...who knows what will happen if I go or not, and if I am successful...

I will address a single on e of your points, good Sir:
Can you think of ANYTHING that the government does either so well that you would want them to do MORE of it, or can you think of ANYTHING that is done by both the government and a private enterprise where the government does it better, more efficiently or more responsively?
Now then, do you want these folks in charge of your very life? Look to the entire world to see how happy they are with their government run systems. I will admit we have a delivery problem, but let us not scrap the entire thing in haste, eh?

yeah you have a point there doc...

I guess there's not much to do or change , you know? Sure I would love for everything to be government subsidized or cheaper to citizens or even allow private medical and university and stuff like that in the states but I guess it's not in the cards.

Abroad too, it's difficult I guess with low income, high inflation, and non adjusted GDP etc.

It's just sad that people have such a hard time going to university because of high tuition costs, and medical offices because of high copays...or forced out of their homes because they can't pay the exhorbant property taxes..just thoughts that add up..

I'm not familiar with scrapping it all in haste, what do you mean?

I refer to allowing a government takeover. Once they get it, we never get it back. From that point forward, we have no control left. Hence, the whole system is scrapped. PS: the federal government through Medicare and Medicaid (through the states in the last case) already either directly control or significantly influence 65% of healthcare dollar in the US. There was a fascinating article in one of my journals that directly tied the increase in government involvement in healthcare with the rising cost. I will try to find it. As to one of your other points about the government susidizing this or that, remember, the government produces NOTHING of it's own. It only takes from some to give to others that it favors more. It is all just incredibly inefficient, forced charity.

If there is ONE thing that I would Love to see consistent with government is Health care and the willingness to help those in need in times of need. Some spend millions or even millions on war or providing aid to others yet their own is often suffering in silence. We often never realized the value of health care until we are personally affected. Its sad to know that some are forced into debt or become financial destroyed because of the need to pay for medical bills and/or on going medical attention.

This prompts what I call the "What would you do if you were John Q?" question. - To be in a position where you or your loved one is in desperate need of health care and you find yourself up against the wall.

After all we all share a common primal instinct/desire to survive (either it be for food, shelter, health) I just cant understand why such a common need isn't priority for all governments.
