As there's a lot of pilots and aviation enthusiasts here, I was wondering what's everyone's favourite aircraft ever, and why? |

Damn that's tough........ I was a big aircraft freak as a kid as my Dad was in the industry - would have been in the RAF with better eyesight, and had all kinds of pictures of planes on my wall. As a wide eyed kid the favourite was always the newest sight from Farnborough (got to go on trade days as well because of my Dad) - the Viggen, the Harrier when it did it's flying backwards trick, the SR71's first appearance. Then there were the ground breaking aircraft - the Lightning, the Vulcan, the F4 in all it's variants. As I got a bit older it was the plane that I did all of my air cadet flying in - the humble chipmunk. At the end of the day though it has to come back to the planes that my father flew in during the war - the DC-3 and in particular the Avro Lancaster - an awesome plane in it's own right, but memorable as the only thing in the world that could make my Dad cry - it's kinda tough to top that! |

Probably the F-15E Strike Eagle or the SR-71. On the civil side, I used to work for a company that had a great deal of MD-11s and I developed quite a liking for those. The 777 is another favourite. Chopper-wise it'd have to be the AH-64. |

Mr Mac's finest ![]() ![]() When I became an aviation enthusiast in the late 60s, the F-4 was the most awesome jet fighter/bomber in the sky. Other favourites Military: Avro Lancaster, Avro Vulcan, Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, EE Lightning, Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, NA XB-70A Valkyrie, Supermarine Spitfire. Civil: Concorde, Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation, Vickers Super VC-10 |

To many to choose, but millitary aircraft would have to include Harrier, F-111, Avro Vulcan (XH 558 awesome at Cosford last week !!!!!) De Havilland Mosquito, Sukhoi 27/37, EE Lightning, Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt, Lancaster. Civil aircraft would have to be VC-10, DC-8, and the Lockheed Tristar, and for the long haul flight it would have to be the 777-300. After much deliberation in first place i put the ![]() |

My favorite airplane to FLY, the C-17 Globemaster III. ![]() But I think the most absolutely GORGEOUS aircraft of all time is the XB-70 Valkyrie. Only two prototypes ever built, one crashed. Program scrapped with high-altitude supersonic bombing became obsolete in the 70-80's. ![]() ![]() |

@Chris Why was the C-17 nicknamed "Moose"? |

Well, when we refuel on the ground, the fuel going into the tanks pushes the air that's inside, out through vents. As it comes out, it makes a "honking" sort of noise, somewhat similar to the sound you can make by blowing across the mouth of a big jug. People say that the noise sounds like a moose call. Kind of silly, if you ask me. I always refer to the C-17 as "Little Buddy", or sometimes "Barney". (i.e. the C-5 is called "FRED", and we're the slightly smaller, chubby friend) |

While I am nowhere near in the aviation industry, nor do I have too much knowledge of them, I am a moderate fan of aircraft and I would have to say my favorite is: ![]() B-1b Lancer |
